All WVU Parkersburg students must adhere to the Code of Student Conduct. If there is a written report or written complaint filed with the Office for Academic and Student Affairs, the list below is a rough outline of the process for handling the concern. Please note that each violation of the code is handled differently based upon each infraction, so the information listed is for general knowledge, not a set guide.
Complaint received in writing to the Office for Academic Affairs.
Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs interviews student(s), faculty or staff involved.
Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs attempts to informally resolve the complaint in an administrative resolution.
Possible sanctions, if found in violation of the code of conduct in this informal setting, can include warning, activity restriction/loss of privileges, probation, fines, restitution, discretionary sanctions, interim suspension, suspension, or expulsion.
If unable to resolve this infraction at the administrative level, or if an appeal is filed, a Student Disciplinary Hearing Board will be called. All parties involved (the accused, accuser and campus facilitator) review the names from the list of appointees to the Disciplinary Hearing Board to strike the names of those members who are not desired to participate by the parties. Also, the student may draft a written response to the accusation/complaint, and assistance of an on-campus advisor is permitted. The use of legal counsel is permitted with at least 48 hours advance notice to the Hearing Panel. A formal letter from the Office for Academic Affairs is sent to the respondent with a copy of the complaint, the Code of Student Conduct and the Disciplinary Hearing Process.
A formal letter from the Office for Academic Affairs is sent to the complainant with a copy of the letter to the respondent, the Code of Student Conduct and the Disciplinary Hearing Process and a copy of respondent’s response to accusations.
A Disciplinary Hearing is called: all parties are guaranteed a right to participate.
An outcome can range from a written warning to suspension or expulsion.
