Steps to Join
Applying to Learn and Earn is easy! All you have to do is fill out an application and upload your resume. If you have any questions along the way, our staff is here to help you every step of the way.
Step 1: Application
• Contact the Learn and Earn coordinator at 304-424-8383 or wed@wvup.edu
• Stop by the Workforce and Economic Development building on the WVU Parkersburg main campus
• Learn and Earn coordinator verifies eligibility for internship
IF ELIGIBLE:
• The Learn and Earn coordinator will notify the student via email of their eligibility
• The student contacts Career Services for aid with resume and interview skills
• Learn and Earn coordinator and Career Services hold a mock interview
IF INELIGIBLE:
• Learn and Earn coordinator will notify the student via email of ineligibility and the reasoning
Step 2: Interviews
• Learn and Earn coordinator sends resumes via Google Drive to companies
• Employer selects interns to interview
IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE EMPLOYERS THE STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE FOR:
• Learn and Earn Coordinator organizes the interview process
• Companies decide which type of interview works best (e.g., committee, mixer, etc.)
• Provide the student with employer biography (e.g., video, paragraph, etc.)
• Employer, with assistance from Learn and Earn coordinator if necessary, will get ahold of the interns they have selected for an interview
Step 3: Employers Select Applicant
• Employer offers the position to the student
• Employer notifies Learn and Earn coordinator which student they have hired
• Student meets with Learn and Earn coordinator to determine the goals and outcomes of the internship
• Intern Agreement document is created and the intern signs
Step 4: Internship
• Learn and Earn coordinator stays in contact with the intern periodically throughout the internship
• Learn and Earn coordinator will act as a liaison between the employer and intern if problems arise
• A quarterly evaluation will be sent out on dates determined by the Learn and Earn coordinator and allow the interns to provide feedback
• A final evaluation will be sent out at the end of the Learn and Earn program and allow the interns to provide feedback
How Much Can I Earn?
The amount earned in the Learn and Earn program is individualized to the employer hiring, but a minimum of $10 an hour is required. If the intern is hired once the Learn and Earn internship is completed, the employer should provide their full-time position wage.
Intern Eligibility Requirements
Learn and Earn basic eligibility requirements are that you must
Successfully completed 12 credit hours
Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher
Be in a degree program related to the Learn and Earn internship openings
Be a first or second-year student at WVU Parkersburg
Learn and Earn Benefits
As a Learn and Earn intern, you will receive
A Steady Paycheck. Earn money while receiving work experience in their field of study.
Valuable Work Experience. Gain valuable work experience that will complement your higher education experience at WVU Parkersburg.
References. Provides interns references for future job applications.
Potential Future Employee. Once the Learn and Earn internship ends the employer can decide to hire the intern into a full-time position.
