Introduction to Welding for Industry

This course will focus on building the appropriate skills and knowledge needed to become MIG and Stick welding certified through classroom knowledge attainment as well as hands-on in the WVU Parkersburg Applied Technology Center welding lab. Students will learn how to become MIG and Stick welding certified and will take the American Welding Society (AWS) national exam at the end of the program. During the four-week break in the program, students will be able to practice at the ATC building on campus to continue sharpening their skills.

Pre-requisites: None

Co-requisites: To be successful, students must have or do the following:

  • Physical attendance

Course Student Learning Outcomes: The student will:

  • Be certified as Welder in MIG welding if they pass the AWS Certification exam
  • Be certified as a Welder in Stick welding if they pass the AWS Certification exam

  • T- joints in 2g, 3g and 4g positions
  • Bevel plate practicing in all positions
  • Bevel plate AWS certification testing in all positions
  • Striking and controlling arc
  • Pad of beads in flat position e6010 and e7018
  • Fillet weld horizontal lap joint
  • Fillet weld t- joint in all positions
  • Bevel plate in all positions
  • Guided bend test
