What are Community Education Classes?

These classes are provided by West Virginia University at Parkersburg to offer you fun and affordable learning opportunities. Many of these classes are suitable for all ages, offered on evenings and weekends, and you don’t need to be a student of WVU Parkersburg to register. Whether you want to learn a new hobby, or just have fun with friends, OUR Community Education classes are for YOU!

Online classes through WVU Parkersburg’s Workforce & Economic Development are an easy, affordable way for you to get the training you need to take your career to the next level. We partner with national leaders in online education to offer a comprehensive library of practical, career enhancing classes available at your convenience. Our online classes are non-credit, and in many cases can lead to a professional certificate in a number of practical areas.

Available Community Education Classes

Dancing for Birth 
Six one-hour sessions
Monday, March 4, 11, 18, 25 & April 1 & 8 | 6 – 7pm | $35

Activate your instincts! Join us for a prenatal class that includes fitness, birth wisdom, and birth readiness. Dancing For Birth™ classes are a wonderful way to connect with your baby while you are pregnant, and babies are welcome to attend the class with you postpartum. The perinatal time frame is our focus, but if you are not currently expecting, you are still welcome to join us for community and fitness.

American Heart Association First Aid
Two separate 3-hour sessions
Tuesday, March 13 & May 14 | 6-9pm | $20 + $35 Certification Fee  (Paid to instructor)

This class is designed for the layperson with no medical experience. Students will be instructed on First Aid for all victim types, and choking relief will also be covered. With the certification fee, you will be issued a two-year certification from the American Heart Association in the mail after class completion. Skills demonstration will be required.

Advanced Beginner Sewing 
Four three-hour sessions
Thursday, March 14, 21, 28 & April 4 | 5 – 8pm | $60 + $40 Material Fee

This class is intended for those who have completed the Beginner Sewing Skills course and have a basic knowledge of sewing. During this four-week session, participants will utilize their personal sewing machine to create a sewing project that showcases the skills mastered in the course. They will learn about closures, interfacings, working with various fabrics (cutting, marking, pressing, seaming) and an intensive look into pattern use. Students will need to bring their own sewing machine and tools. The material fee will cover the cost of fabrics, patterns, and supplies for the sewing project.

Learn Photoshop Elements Mini-Workshop 
Two sessions
Friday, March 15 from 6:30-9pm & Saturday, March 16 from 8am-4:30pm | $50

Adobe Photoshop Elements has all the tools you need to put the final polish on your images. Amanda Haddox and Ron Gaskin of Mountaineer Photo Excursions will teach you “hands-on” how to crop an image to improve composition, clear red eyes, use the “dodge” and “burn” tools, adjust colors, clean up camera shake, turn frowns into smiles and more! Bring your laptop with any version of Photoshop Elements (PS 2019 is available as a free-trial recommended for this mini-workshop).

Digital Photography – Learn, Improve, Create! 
Three 2.5 hour sessions
Wednesday, March 20, 27 & April 3| 6:30 – 9pm | $30

During this course, you will learn basic camera controls and how to get the most from the camera you have. Please bring your cameras along with additional lenses you may have along with your camera owner’s manual. Students that know the controls on their cameras will learn how to use their knowledge to improve their photography results. The course will also discuss different types of cameras and photography equipment, and which choices may work best for different people and subjects. Students will have the opportunity to bring in their photos for group critics. You will learn simple ways to improve your photos, along with the rules of composition. You will learn when you want a wide-angle lens, when to use a telephoto lens, and when to stick with what you have. The course will also discuss some limited post-processing techniques, such as cropping, black & white conversion, and more.

Trauma Care & Emergency First Aid 
One 3 hour session
Thursday, March 21| 6 – 9pm | $25

Open to all skill levels: law enforcement, military and civilians welcome! This class will teach you what is needed to address trauma and first aid in an emergency situation. This class is taught by Tim Coone, Batallion Medic; Craig Withrow, former Army Medic and current EMT; Mike Stump, Belpre Police Department and the Washington County S.W.A.T. team. Please bring an IFAK or personal First Aid kit if you have one. This is not a requirement.

Introduction to Ableton Live 
One two-hour session
Monday, March 25 | 6 – 8pm | $25

Learn to use Ableton Live to supplement live performances with pre-recorded tracks and to provide cues and a click track to keep performers in sync. Learn the basics of the software’s timeline and features, how to import pre-recorded tracks, adjust tempos, change song structure on the fly, and integrate the software into your venue’s audio system. Great for small bands and church worship teams.

Beginner American Sign Language 
Eight 1.5 hour sessions
Tuesday, March 26 & April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 & May 7 & 14  | 6:30 – 8pm | $50

This is Sign Language for everyone. This class will focus on basic conversational sign language as well as information regarding deaf culture with the goal to be able to communicate on a basic level with deaf and hard of hearing people whom you may encounter in their workplaces or in everyday social events. This is perfect for kids and families, or just anyone who has an interest in Sign Langauge.

Beginner Calligraphy 
Four one-hour sessions
Tuesday, April 2, 9, 16 & 23 | 6 – 7pm | $25

Learn the art of calligraphy in a relaxed atmosphere. Students will get hands-on experience learning two fonts in a one-hour per week class over the span of four weeks. Students will need a 3.5 size calligraphy marker (any color) and lined notebook paper.

Garage Welding 
Six three-hour sessions
Monday, April 8, 15, 22, 29 & May 6 & 13| 6 – 9pm

Students will learn basic welding procedures and techniques to complete common around the house, garage or farm repairs. Students are required to provide basic personal protection equipment (PPE) used in the workplace or shop. Required PPE items include a welding jacket, welding hood/shield, safety glasses or side shields for Rx eyewear, boots and gloves. Long pants and long sleeves are also required. Tools needed for the class include a 4 or 6-inch grinder with cut-off wheels and grinding wheels, slag/chipping hammer, side cut pliers or ‘welpers,’ crescent wrench and/or channel locks.

Basic Life Support
Two separate four-hour sessions
Tuesday, April 9 & 23 | 5 – 9pm | $25 + $35 Certification Fee (paid to the instructor)

This is an American Heart Association Basic Life Support and CPR class designed for those in healthcare, those entering healthcare related schooling or as required for employment. Students will be instructed on both 1-and-2 Rescuer CPR for all victim types. Choking relief and AED use will also be covered. With the certification fee, you will be issued a 2-year certification from the American Heart Association in the mail after class completion. The Skills demonstration is required.

Let your child experience college, and gain a wealth of knowledge in a variety of subjects in this one- or four-week program. Your child can attend just one week, or all four weeks of classes. For children ages 8 – 12

Community Education Class Policies

Registration

  • Registration is required for all Community Education Classes and should be made at least one week prior to the start of the class.
  • There is a fee to enroll, but you will not receive an invoice until the class is filled.
  • To register, please complete the Registration Form above and mail it to the address provided on the form or email it to ude.puvwnull@dew. You may also call 304-424-8383 with questions or to register.

Payment

  • Students will receive their registration invoice at the email address they’ve provided.
  • The registration fees must be paid at the WVU Parkersburg Business Office unless otherwise noted.

Cancellation

  • Requests to withdraw from a class must be made at least two weeks (14 days) before the first day of class to receive a refund. If a student withdraws less than two weeks before the date a class starts, a refund will not be issued.
  • If classes are canceled due to weather, they will be rescheduled.

  • If you need to have specific supplies or technology for a class, this information is provided in the class description. Please review these requirements before registering.
  • WVU Parkersburg retains the right to use photos taken during classes for marketing purposes.
