Why Electricity & Instrumentation?

The field of Electricity & Instrumentation is an ever-changing, continuously growing area. The demand for qualified technicians in the field increases on a daily basis. As technology changes and improves, highly trained maintenance craftsmen are an important asset for every industrial, commercial and office facility.

Nationwide, job growth in the field is predicted to be one of the highest of all areas. The numbers in West Virginia and the surrounding states reflect this as well.

Areas of study include, but are not limited to, electrical theory, the national electrical code, bending and installation of conduit, tubing and piping, various types of mechanical and electrical drawings, electronics, hydraulics and pneumatics, process control instrumentation, and programmable logic controllers, as well as troubleshooting skills in all areas.

This program offers a degree certificate as well as a certificate from NCCER.  The curriculum is also included in two associate degree programs: Multi-craft Technology and Electronic Engineering Technology. Therefore, making a transition to either of these programs nearly seamless. Upon completion of an associate program, application to our bachelor of applied technology is then available.  WVU Parkersburg is one of few schools nationwide which affords this opportunity.

Job Outlook

Numbers from 2009 indicated a statewide growth of approximately 7 percent over the next 10 years. Nationwide growth 12-15 percent with surrounding states also falling in that range.
