Financial Aid Programs
Federal Pell Grant
Available to undergraduate students who show financial
need and have not earned a bachelor or professional degree. The award is
based on enrollment status, i.e. full-time, part-time, etc. Please notify
the WVU at Parkersburg Financial Aid Office if your enrollment status
changes during the year.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
Available to undergraduate students who have not
earned a bachelor or professional degree and demonstrate financial need.
Priority is given to students that have completed the financial aid
process by May 1. Limited funding restricts the number of awards offered
annually.
West Virginia Higher Education Grant
Available to full-time, undergraduate, West Virginia
residents. For consideration, the applicant must apply for federal
student aid and demonstrate need, and the application must be received
by March 1 of the award year. The student is required to complete 24
credit hours per academic year and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative
grade point average. The state grant pays up to 75% of tuition and fees.
Further questions about the state grant program should be directed to
the West Virginia Higher Education Grant Program at (304) 558-4614 or
1-888-825-5707. WVHEG Awards are subject to
reduction or cancellation. Awards are tentative until finalized by the
WVHEG program administrators.
HEAPS (Higher Education Assistance for Part-time
students)
Awarded to part-time, (1-11 credit hours) students who
are WV residents. Limited funding restricts number of awards.
West Virginia PROMISE
Scholarships
West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real
Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) is a merit-based
scholarship program designed to keep qualified students in West Virginia
by making college affordable. All
students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by
March 1. For eligibility requirements and any additional information, visit
www.promisescholarships.org
or call
1-800-WVPROMISE.
Federal Work Study
Available to undergraduate students who demonstrate
financial need. Applications must be processed by May 1 of the award
year. Positions are available both on and off campus. This money is not
available the first week of classes; students are paid monthly for hours
worked. Limited funding restricts the number of awards annually.
Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan
Available to undergraduate students who demonstrate
financial need and are enrolled at least half-time (6 hours). The
interest rate on the loan is variable and established each June but will
not exceed 8.25%. A processing fee may be deducted from the borrowed
amount so the actual check may be less than the borrowed amount shown on
the award letter. The loan repayment begins six months after graduating
or leaving school. Annual amounts are $2625 for freshmen, $3500 for
sophomores, and $5500 for juniors and seniors.
Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
Available to undergraduate students who are enrolled
at least half-time (6 hours) and have not had their cost of attendance
met through other aid awards. The interest rate will not exceed 8.25%. A
processing fee may be deducted from the borrowed amount so the actual
check may be less than the borrowed amount shown on the award letter.
The loan repayment begins six months after graduating or leaving school.
However, interest payments on the loan must be paid while the student is
in school or deferred and capitalized (added to the principal of the
loan). Annual amounts available are the same as for the Subsidized
Stafford Loan and are calculated by combining the totals for the two
awards so that a borrower may only receive the maximum through one or
the other, or a combination of both Subsidized and Unsubsidized.
Additional amounts of up to $4,000 for freshmen and sophomores and
$5,000 for juniors and seniors may be available to independent students
or dependent students whose parents are denied a Federal PLUS Loan.
Federal PLUS Loan
Available to parents of dependent students who are
enrolled at least half-time (6 hours). The parent must have a good
credit history and may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus any
financial awards. The interest rate on the loan is variable and
established each June, but will not exceed 9%. A processing fee may be
deducted from the borrowed amount so the actual check may be less than
the borrowed amount shown on the letter.
