Basic Financial Aid Information and Application Procedure
To apply for financial aid, you should submit the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the February 15 priority
or March 1 absolute to ensure that you meet the
deadline for state student aid funding as well as federal student aid
funding. You can get this form from your guidance counselor or from the
Financial Aid Office (e-mail),
or phone 304-424-8210.
The FAFSA is also accessible on the web after January 1 at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. To assure that
the student’s financial aid report is forwarded to the colleges of their
choice, school codes are listed on the FAFSA. The West Virginia
University at Parkersburg school code is 003828.
The www.fafsa.ed.gov website
includes instructions on how to correctly complete the FAFSA application
and assists the student in applying for a PIN (personal identification
number) at the
www.pin.ed.gov website. This PIN number is used each year to
electronically sign the FAFSA when applying for financial aid
assistance. If you do not have a PIN, you will need to print a signature
page and mail it to the processor to finalize the application status.
Using a PIN will eliminate the signature step in the application
process.
Please Note: Applying for individual PIN numbers should be done by
the student as well as the parents of the student if the
student is still considered a dependent applicant. After submitting a
PIN application on the web, students and parents will receive the PIN
number in approximately 24-48 hours.
Financial Need Funding
To receive financial aid based on need from West Virginia University
at Parkersburg or federal and state governments,
you must complete and submit the Free
Application for Federal Student (FAFSA).
The paper version of the FAFSA is available from the West Virginia
University at Parkersburg Financial Aid Office or from your high school
guidance counselor; however, the U.S. Department of Education is
encouraging students to apply online. The paper version (or the
web version) must be submitted if you wish to be considered for
all available aid resources including grants, loans, and student
employment. No processing fee is required for either form.
Because some programs have limited funding, you should submit the
completed FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible to
receive consideration for programs.
Undergraduate West Virginia residents must remember to meet the March 1
deadline for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant and the West
Virginia PROMISE Scholarship.
The FAFSA is used to determine your expected family contribution
towards the cost of your education, which in turn, determines your
"financial need." Three to four weeks after you mail the FAFSA, an
acknowledgement will be sent to you by the federal application
processor. Your data will also be submitted electronically to West
Virginia at Parkersburg if you choose. West Virginia University
at Parkersburg’s Title IV Institution Code is 003828.
Student loan funding during an individual’s college years is often
used. The various loan and grant programs available are described
briefly on the
Financial Aid
Programs Page.
Verification Selection
If a student is selected for verification, we are required to ask
the financial aid applicant and his/her family for additional
documentation. If you are required to provide more information, you will
need to submit a copy of your signed income tax return along with
the requested verification worksheets. This paperwork should be returned
to our office as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving your
financial aid award.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Maintaining satisfactory
academic progress toward completion of a
degree is required in order to continue receiving any type of financial
student aid funding.
Special Circumstances
If there is a change in your family's financial situation because of
death, divorce, job loss, or other special circumstances, contact the
Financial Aid Office.
