Student Government Association President Austin Grimmett is West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s featured student for November 2017. Austin began attending WVU Parkersburg in January 2015 and is currently pursuing his bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in general business.

Initially, Austin majored in legal studies with the plan of earning a four-year degree from WVU Parkersburg and moving on to law school. However, according to Austin, upon observing the enthusiasm WVU Parkersburg’s business faculty and students have for the programs, he decided to switch majors. Now, his future plans include pursuing both a master’s in business and a law degree.

Regarding this decision, Austin says, “I figured it’d be better to change majors now and have that same passion every day than to pursue something I don’t really want just because it’s easier to stay on the same path.”

Austin joined the Student Government Association (SGA) in 2016 and was elected president in May 2017. He also sits on the college’s Board of Governors as the student body representative. On Tuesday and Wednesdays, he serves as a tutor in the Riverhawk Tutoring & Resource Center. When he is not busy around the campus, Austin enjoys spending time with his fiancé and playing music. Austin says he has a strong passion for WVU Parkersburg.

“Everyone here is trying to learn to better themselves, and that is what’s most important. We have so many professors here who care deeply about the students. It is their mission to teach and inspire us to learn.”

As far as advice for his fellow students, Austin says, “If you come to college, don’t just come to get a degree. Get an education. Make sure when you go to your classes, you are learning and absorbing as much as you can.”
