Guidelines for Awarding

WVUP Staff Council Employee Scholarships

Applicants must fill out the general scholarship application. No minimum grade point average is required for first-time applicants of Employee Scholarships.

Applicants must be:

Full-time employees or part-time classified employees of WVU Parkersburg for six consecutive months or more. (WVUP employees that have worked previously at WVU or any of its regional campuses may include accumulated service at those campuses.)

Admitted to WVUP as a student with admission complete at the time of scholarship application.

Approved by supervisor to take class (prior to applying for scholarship) if class occurs during work hours. (See Institutional Policy IV-19A.)

Coursework must be taken on WVUP campuses and must carry college credit.

Students receiving an Employee Scholarship will receive an award letter from the Financial Aid Office.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of in-state tuition for no more than two classes per semester. Out-of-state employee awarded an Employee Scholarship will received in-state equivalent of tuition fees.

When reapplying, the employee to be reconsidered must have completed the previous course and maintained a 2.0 grade point average in the class.

Recipient criteria:

Applicants will be considered on a first come, first serve basis and must meet deadline set up by the Financial Aid Office – for the Fall, August 1 and for the Spring, December 1.

Tuition recipients must successfully complete their course work in order to receive additional funds the following semester unless allocated moneys are returned to the fund. Appeals to the above stipulation may be made to the Staff Development Committee.

If a scholarship is denied and the employee believes that extenuating circumstances warrant an appeal, the following appeal process may be utilized:

The appeal is received by the Financial Aid Director by the deadline stated in the letter of Ineligibility for Renewal previously sent to the student.

The appeal is brought to the attention of the Scholarship Committee in a timely manner for review and discussion.

The committee, after careful review, votes either:

a. Reinstate full eligibility

b. Deny eligibility, notifying the student of his/her right to appeal to the Dean of Students.

After a majority decision has been reached, the student is notified of the committee’s decision.

If the Financial Aid Director is unable to convene a Scholarship Committee meeting, the appeal will be routed with all pertinent information to the committee members as expeditiously as possible. The appeal folder will include a sign-off sheet for each committee member to select his/her voting option and sign off on the selection.

Decisions of the Scholarship Committee may be appealed to the Dean of Students.
