Welcome & Minutes

Aaron Crites, Chair, welcomed the committee to the meeting. Minutes of the September 2008 meeting were approved.  Upon recommendation, hard copies of the minutes will be available during future meetings.

New Business

Role of Committee

The committee is encouraged to take a more active role and participation from each member is crucial.  Representatives are reminded to go back to their respective areas and communicate ideas and get feedback.  Ideas include developing a training catalog, arranging safety information to distribute to the campus, and serving as safety “gurus.”

Sex Offender Policy

Changes to the application policy are being considered to include a section about felony sex offender convictions.  The goal is to make it confidential, but still allow security to take protective steps since a children’s daycare facility exists on campus.  The academic file would be separate from the felony information.

Background Checks

Expanding background checks for employees was discussed.  Questions were raised about whether the limits are through WVU and what other colleges do.

Chemical Spill Protocol

A chemical spills protocol ideas was distributed. After discussion, it is noted that the chemical hygiene plan describes the procedures for regular-type spills. The CHO will audit the existing plan to see if it is up to date and appropriate.

Safety Plan

A discussion of safety plan ideas was conducted and suggested changes will be merged into a new draft. 

A link to the safety plan is being added to the student services website. 

Cliff Buckley noted that the evacuation plans need to have 300 feet listed as the distance, not 100 feet.
