Safety Committee Meeting Minutes

November 18, 2005

10:00 a.m., President’s Conference Room

Those present: Craig Rabatin, John Tharp, Dave White, Paul Milhoan, Gary Waggoner, Cathy Mutz, Joe Badgley, Christine Post, Charlene McNulty, and Patsy Bee

Absent: Mary Lott, Nelson Ortiz, Lennie Moore, and Al Collins

Craig Rabatin, Chair, called the meeting to order.

Old Business

Minutes from the last meeting was distributed and reviewed.

Action Item List

The Project Sheet was reviewed and the following was noted:

Dave White reported that work is continuing on the emergency phones both internal and external and there are no new issues. He also reported that they are continuing to work on post emergency exit information in all classrooms. They have completed the work on shelter in-place, and they are continuing to work on updating emergency numbers.

It was also reported that work is continuing on review of security process and monitoring of cell/radio phones at switchboard.

Craig reported that working is continuing on the annual safety report.

Safety Plan Responses

Craig Rabatin reviewed copies of the Safety Plan that President Gnage had sent out to everyone. He noted that only a few responses had been received and he encouraged everyone to review and submit suggestions. It was suggested that committee members be assigned to specific sections. Committee members reviewed the Plan and determined the following:

Administration – President Gnage

The Chemical Hygiene Officer – John Tharp and Gary Waggoner were assigned to this section. They recommended that a chemical hygiene officer be selected for the entire college with specific units under that individual such as science labs, JCC, print shop, etc.

The Facilities Director – Dave White was assigned to this section. Dave noted that the college meets most of the relevant federal and state requirements with the exception of the elevators which will need to be reviewed and discussed.

Campus Security – Nelson Ortiz was assigned to this section.

Emergency Response – Safety Committee will work on this section.

General Health and Safety – Safety Committee will work on this section.

Dave White noted that it is important for the committee to know how to read the MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheet). He will bring copies to the next meeting.

Fire Safety – Dave White was assigned to this section.

Laboratory Safety – John Tharp was assigned to this section. It was suggested that lab safety training be done during In-Service and that there needs to be a Safety Director or Officer.

Hazardous Waste – John Tharp and Dave White were assigned to this section.

Technology Safety – Dan Williamson was assigned to this section.

Occupational Health and Safety/Work Practices – Dave White was assigned to this section.

Safety Inspections/Audits – Dave White was assigned to this section. He noted that WVU Morgantown would need to work with the college on this.

Vehicle Maintenance – Dave White was assigned to this section.

Safety Training – Davie White was assigned to this section. Dave reported that this has begun. The first fire drill was held and went well. Safe driving videos have begun, and other safety videos will be available in the future.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the Safety Committee will be held after the holidays sometime in January.

With no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned.
