Title:     #VIII-5. Policy on Tobacco-Free Environment

Date:    July 10, 2006 (replaces version dated October 14, 2005)

Recognizing its obligation to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, West Virginia University at Parkersburg is promoting a policy to establish a tobacco-free environment in the campus facilities.  The use of all tobacco products is, therefore, prohibited in all facilities of West Virginia University at Parkersburg.  This policy also applies to all buildings of WVUP, including the Jackson County Center facility and all state vehicles owned by WVUP.

“Tobacco-Free Environment" and “No Smoking” signs are displayed in appropriate locations.

Smoking is permitted outdoors in designated areas only. The goal is to maintain a smoke-free environment at all main entrances. Designated smoking areas are identified by green “DESIGNATED SMOKING AREA” signs posted outside the following locations:

Caperton Center – west side of building

Center for Corporate and Community Education – east side of building

College Activities Center – behind cafeteria

Technology Wing – adjacent to lower level entrance

Jackson County Center Classroom Building – south side of building

Jackson County Center Administrative Building – west side of building

In accordance with the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department’s Clean Indoor Air Regulation that went into effect on October 1, 2005, smoking areas in these designated locations are at least 15 feet away from any entrance, window or ventilation/HVAC system.

Personal vehicles parked in WVUP parking lots are also designated as smoking areas.

Educational programs on health issues related to tobacco use and smoking cessation workshops will be provided to employees and students.

All members of the WVUP community are responsible for observing this policy.  Violators will be issued a citation of $25 by Campus Police.  Additional fines may be imposed by the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department.
