 INTRODUCTION AND COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the basic skills and techniques used in treating various forms of psychopathology.

 

OBJECTIVES 

I.         COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.            Develop a repertory of interview skills and strategies.

2.            Identify the potential applicability of many counseling strategies for different client problems.

3.            Apply counseling skills and strategies for diverse client populations.

4.            Develop ways to monitor and evaluate your behavior and client behavior during psychotherapy.

5.            Understand ethical and legal obligations in the process of psychotherapy.

 

II.      GENERAL OBJECTIVES

          1.      Written Communication - Each student will submit a typed journal, exercises, critical thinking questions, applications and self evaluations.

         2.      Oral Communication - Each student will be required to participate in individual and team presentations which includes videotaping.

         3.      Mathematical Skills/Competencies - Each student will be required to make critical interpretations of a statistical or graphical nature as necessary.

         4.      Information Access/Literacy Skills - Each student will be required to conduct an internet search as an element of research.  Use of e-mail will be encouraged.

         5.      Scientific Inquiry and Research - Each student will be required to research major psychotherapy systems and strategies as they are studied.

         6.      A Cultural, Artistic and Global Perspective - Each student will be required to consider gender and cultural factors in all areas of study.

 

TOPICS TO BE STUDIED:

         How will course objectives be met?

                Mini lecture, student group presentations, small group discussion, experiential exercises, role plays, guest speakers, case studies, vignettes, films and application exercises will be utilized.

 

SPECIAL PROJECTS TO BE INCLUDED IN COURSE:  Research Papers, Reports,

         Surveys, Projects, Annotated Bibliographies, Other

          The following activities, projects and exercises will be required:

         1.      Group Presentations (explained in classroom)

         2.      Journal

         3.      Research Project

         4.      Case Study (completed in the classroom)

5.            Application Exercises (explained in classroom)

6.            Video Role Play

 

         Late Assignments: Assignments turned in late will receive a 10% reduction for each day late up to a maximum of 20% per week. All written assignments are to be typed.

 

METHODS OF STUDENT EVALUATION

         Tests (How many?  How often?  What type?), Quizzes,  Laboratory Activities, Clinical Experiences.

 

         Overview of Final Grade:  Your final grade will be determined by the total number of points earned from the journal, written assignments, videotapes, exercises and classroom application.  Feedback regarding your performance may be obtained at any time.

 

         Grading Scale:  90 - 100% = A,

                            80 - 89 =B,

                            70 - 79 =C,

                            60 - 69 = D

  

ASSESSMENT OF OUTCOMES:

         What measurements will be used to demonstrate that outcomes have been reached? 

         (Refer to class as a whole, not individual students.)

          Demonstrated application and competencies.

          Attendance:  Each student is expected to conform to the institution’s attendance policy.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact your instructor for your assignments.  Prior notification is necessary for any absence. Due to the nature of this course, missing a complete session will result in a reduction in the final grade. 

         Special Assistance: If you have special learning needs or qualify for accommodations, please communicate those needs to me before any relevant assignment.

          Office Hours: During the evening I am available between 6:00-7:00 on Monday, or I am available at any arranged time by appointment. I am also available during the day on Monday and Wednesday between 9:45 and 11:00.        

         Withdrawal: The last day for dropping a class is Friday, March 16
