My Philosophy on Online Courses

Even for courses that I teach in the classroom that meet the “regular” number of hours each semester, I provide and require an online component for the course.  My reasons for doing this include:

“It’s in there.”  Remember the old spaghetti sauce ad (Prego, I think?) that used the tag line “It’s in there”?  That’s my best reason for putting all these materials online.  If you have a question or need help, “it’s in there.”  If you read my materials and instruction pages, you will find the answer to your questions about 95% of the time.

·         Access.  Access. Access.  Since you theoretically have access to the Internet 24/7 from just about anywhere in the free world today, that makes it easy for you to get help and dig into the course materials when it suits your schedule.  If you’re a morning person, you can get the materials.  If you work best at 2 a.m., you’re good to go!

·         Every student gets the same info – all the time.   I simply don’t need to worry about providing each person with the information; it’s always there for you.

·         Work when it works for you.  By providing you access to the lecture notes, assignments, instructions, and quizzes online all the time, you can better adjust your busy life to meet the course requirements.   This does NOT mean that my courses are “self-paced” in the sense that you can complete the work whenever the mood strikes you.  (See my philosophy on deadlines.)
