"I consider Gambit to be a literary magazine for amateurs. I am using amateur to mean two things: first, to signify the work of lovers (as the Latin root 'amour' indicates) and second, to signify the work of non- or pre-professionals (in other words, students or writers early in their careers). Thus, Gambit is a gateway magazine, an entry into the world of creative writing. From thirty-five years of experience with student writers, I am firmly convinced that seeing one’s work in print for the first time has both a galvanizing and an almost magical effect on the writer. This changes everything: the writer becomes self-conscious in a positive way which leads to an enhanced sense of craftsmanship and of oneself as the producer of creative work. Toward this end, we do not edit Gambit. Material is printed as it was submitted. I guess that most literary magazines wish that they were The Kenyon Review or Ploughshares and I guess that I know why. But these excellent magazines and others like them already exist in considerable number and what is much more rare is the amateur magazine. Gambit serves this important initiatory purpose."
