Environmental Action Group Small Scale Food Production

Interested in growing more of your own food? Come to the small scale food production presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. in room 1317.

Hans and Alexandria Straight will present methods to produce more of your own food in a variety of settings. Some of today’s most productive small-scale growing methods will be reviewed, such as:

  • container production
  •  raised beds
  •  square foot garden
  •  straw bale gardening
  • backyard poultry and rabbits.

Hans Straight is an Instructional Specialist in Diversified Agriculture at WVU Parkersburg. Originally from Buckhannon, WV, Mr. Straight received his undergraduate degree in Animal and Veterinary Science with a minor in Horticulture from WVU and holds a Master’s Degree in Agriculture from WVU.  He and his wife Alexandria Straight, have a small farm in Ritchie County where they raise their three-year-old son Ronan, as well as horses, goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits and a large garden. Currently president of the Ritchie County Farmers Market Association, Mr. Straight worked for the WVU Extension Service in Gilmer County and served as Director of the Ritchie County Family Resource Network before coming to WVU Parkersburg.

Alexandria Straight holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal and Veterinary Science with a minor in Horticulture and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture from West Virginia University. Straight has been the WVU Extension Agent for Agricultural and Natural Resources in Ritchie County for five years. She has done numerous presentations across the state on a variety of topics including container production, straw bale gardening, and poultry production.

The presentation is sponsored by the WVU Parkersburg Environmental Action Group and is free and open to the public.
