The My Freedom Wish program was created by the Veterans Corps as a means to fulfill the wishes of a veteran’s child who suffers from a severe medical illness, a special need or a disability. The group hosts fundraising events throughout the year for the program as well as a final banquet where the chosen child’s wishes are granted. Proceeds from the events and the banquet are used to grant the selected child’s wishes.
Staff Sgt. Shawn Healy, Veterans Advocate, served in Iraq during 2009-2010. While deployed, he witnessed an unforgettable moment when a child became a casualty of war. Watching the little boy get carried away from an attack by improvised explosive devices inspired Healy to make a difference in the lives of children in need. Upon returning home and becoming the Veterans Advocate at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, Healy began My Freedom Wish as an initiative to help improve the quality of life for a needy area child.
My Freedom Wish is for the child of a veteran who is between the ages of 3 and 18 at the time of applying. After a child is referred, My Freedom Wish will work with parents to ensure that a child meets the qualification of a medical condition, disability or other special need.
