The Legend of the ‘Hawk
“During the Spring 2009 Semester the student body was given the opportunity to vote on a mascot for the college’s sport club teams. All of the mascot choices had a connection to the region’s history or wildlife.
‘Riverhawks’ won in a landslide.
What is a Riverhawk? This is a reference to the colony of Osprey that make their home on historic Blennerhassett Island, just off the shore near Parkersburg in the middle of the Ohio River.
The Osprey is a sleek, fast moving raptor with a wing span of up to six feet.
Another name for this bird of prey is the “Sea Hawk”. Since our Osprey live on the Ohio River we call our majestic birds “Riverhawks.”
