Child Development Online

Our Child Development program can be completed entirely online, or students can take the initial gen ed courses in person and transition into the online child development courses.

Why Child Development?

Early childhood teachers educate and care for children between the ages of birth and 5. The teachers integrate goals for learning into play and exploration. They prepare learning environments that are engaging and encourage play that will lead to social- emotional, cognitive, and physical development. They plan for and assess children’s learning. They build relationships with children’s families and act as advocates for young children.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the career “preschool teaching” has a projected job growth of 25% nationally by the year 2020. West Virginia offers universal preschool to 4 year olds in the state with increasing educational requirements for teachers in collaborative and Head Start sites.

Why Child Development at WVU Parkersburg?

The child development program is available online.

It is designed as a career ladder with multiple entry and exit points. Students can earn a certificate degree and add to it to earn an associate’s degree without losing any credits. Likewise, they can add additional coursework to the associate degree to earn a bachelor degree without losing credits.

The child development program was designed to include courses required by the WV Department of Education for publicly funded collaborative and Head Start programs.

The program accepts transfer credits from the WV Infant Toddler credential and EDGE.
