Why Child Development?

Early childhood teachers educate and care for children between the ages of birth and 5. They teachers integrate goals for learning into play and exploration. They prepare learning environments that are engaging and encourage play that will lead to social- emotional, cognitive, and physical development. They plan for and assess children’s learning. They build relationships with children’s families and act as advocates for young children.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the career “preschool teaching” has a projected job growth of 25% nationally by the year 2020. West Virginia offers universal preschool to 4 year olds in the state with increasing educational requirements for teachers in collaborative and Head Start sites.
