Why diversified agriculture at WVU Parkersburg?

About $7.2 billion is spent on food in West Virginia every year, but only $7.1 million dollars of that is directly marketed from West Virginia  farmers to consumers. The total yearly value of agricultural production in WV is $592 million. Opportunities exist for major increases in agricultural sales by WV farmers if they have the knowledge and skills to grow and market their products. The diversified agriculture program at WVU Parkersburg will provide both new and current producers with the knowledge and skills to meet these demands while increasing on farm profits. Students interested in producing on their own farms will be able to increase on farm profits by learning best management practices for all forms of agriculture and direct marketing strategies. Students completing the program will be ready for jobs with private agricultural businesses. These jobs are in high demand and students will be prepared for well-paying employment in greenhouses, garden centers, landscaping, and a wide range of supporting services.

The Diversified Agriculture Program at WVU Parkersburg is a one-of-a-kind program in the region. Students can earn a 30-hour certificate by choosing from a variety of agricultural classes that suit their interests. We also offer a 60-hour associate degree program that will give students a wide range of agricultural production classes

Students will also be given opportunities to put their knowledge to work while earning credits through Cooperative Learning internship opportunities with area producers.
