WVU Parkersburg hosts Forensic Association State Championship Tournament
Parkersburg, W.Va. 2/21/13 - The West Virginia Intercollegiate Forensic Association State Championship Tournament will take place Friday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at West Virginia University Parkersburg. Participating colleges include Alderson Broaddus, West Liberty, Marshall University, Fairmont State University, Ohio Valley University and Shepherd University. The event is open to the public.
"It is a privilege and an honor for WVU Parkersburg to be selected as the host site for the WVIFA State Championship Tournament. It is a testimony to the hard work and professionalism exhibited last year by the faculty, staff and students who supported the event when it was held here last February," said Kim Korcsmaros, WVU Parkersburg instructor of speech and Union for Speech and Debate coach.
Three years ago Korcsmaros received a call from the WVIFA with a last minute request that she provide two Lincoln-Douglas debaters to fill out the bracket at the WVIFA state tournament. Two students from her fundamentals of public speaking class, Tyler Ohrn and Joshua Campbell, volunteered, and the team was born. There was no official team at that point. Because of this, Ohrn and Campbell became the nucleus of the current 11-member team. Current members include Tyler Ohrn, Jason Ross, Matthew Renta, Matthew Roberts, Scott Richardson, Joshua Campbell, Alicia Ford, Theresa Overby, Morgan Bryant and Nichole Mileren.
"Despite having multiple obligations, the team members give their time and energy to make the team a success. In competitions this year, the team has won sweepstakes awards and multiple individual trophies in each of the tournaments we have entered. They are truly an asset to WVU Parkersburg and a joy to coach," said Korcsmaros.
