WVU Parkersburg, DuPont co-sponsor Fannie Lou Hamer theatrical presentation Parkersburg, W.Va. 2/5/13 – In observance of Black History Month, West Virginia University at Parkersburg and DuPont Washington Works will co-sponsor a special event with Billie Jean Young. This actress, activist, poet and educator will present a moving performance of her one-woman play, "Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light." The free public performance will take place in WVU Parkersburg’s theater, room 1305, Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. For more than two decades, Young has shared with the world the life story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a human rights activist and sharecropper from Sunflower County, Miss. "Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light" is a compelling and brilliant portrayal about Hamer’s life, challenges and triumphs. It is a timeless story of courage, personal growth and selfless dedication to social justice and equality that is both entertaining and educational. Young, an artist-in-residence at Judson College in Marion, Ala., lives in the "Black Belt" of Alabama in Perry County, the home of Coretta Scott King and Albert Turner, Sr. She is a prolific writer of children's books, poems, historical plays and essays. A MacArthur Fellow, she has educated and inspired hundreds of audiences the world over through her poetry, lectures, drama workshops and community organizing.
