FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEWest Virginia University at Parkersburg's "Partnerships Project" is the recipient of a $105,000 grant from the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.
The grant award is for the institution's professional development school program, an initiative of the Education Division.
Twelve elementary schools in Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie and Wood counties are involved in the public/higher education project coordinated by WVU Parkersburg.
The Partnerships Project is designed to better prepare the college's elementary education teacher candidates for the profession of teaching; provide remedial and enrichment programs for public school students, and provide professional development activities for teacher candidates, in-service teachers and college faculty.
Begun in 1996, the project originally involved WVU Parkersburg and Fairplains Elementary School.
The project now includes 12 elementary school partners, noted Cindy Gissy, acting chair of the college's Education Division.
WVU Parkersburg teaches five instructional strategies courses at the partner schools. A sixth class is offered at WVU Parkersburg with partner elementary school students bused to the college to participate. The course gives students the opportunity to experience the college campus while teacher candidates practice teaching skills and strategies.
Elementary schools involved in the WVU Parkersburg project include Lubeck, Madison, Mineral Wells, Neale, Worthington, Fairplains, Martin, Williamstown, Harrisville, Belmont, Ravenswood and Ripley elementary schools. Belmont, Ravenswood and Ripley are the most recent schools to join the Partnerships Project.
WVU Parkersburg's Education Division offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education.
