FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Virginia University at Parkersburg is one step closer to implementing a new Bachelor of Arts degree.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission recently approved WVU Parkersburg’s request to offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies.

The proposed program must also be approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. That approval request is in process.

West Virginia University’s Board of Governors had previously endorsed the baccalaureate degree.

The goal is to offer the program by the fall of 2008.

“The new degree is intended to enhance our offerings of baccalaureate programs to the placebound, non-traditional student population which we serve,” Rhonda Richards, executive dean of academic affairs, said.

The flexibility offered by the program allows students to combine disciplines and tailor a program to meet their special career or graduate aspirations, she added.  The degree will include three minor areas and a capstone course.

WVU offers a similar program in Morgantown.

Currently, WVU Parkersburg offers two traditional baccalaureate degrees in elementary education and business administration and three non-traditional baccalaureate programs: Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Applied Technology and the Regents Bachelor of Arts.
