FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEWest Virginia University at Parkersburg is the recipient of a $3,000 award for a research project regarding non-traditional students.
The Council of North Central Two-Year Colleges and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association awarded the funds for the project, "Reinforced Learning for Non-Traditional Students."
The WVU Parkersburg project will research if reinforcement through video-streamed course content improves learning among non-traditional students. Project coordinator is Rhonda Richards, executive dean of academic affairs.
Specifically, Dr. Richards said the project is designed to improve retention across the non-traditional student population through innovative advising that will target them into specific sections of general education course offerings. To facilitate this process, the project will support the development of digitally-streamed video accessible through web or podcast delivery for specific general education courses so that non-traditional students can review and reinforce material from their entry-level classes as needed to support learning. She added that the outcome will be to create groundbreaking curriculum and instructional opportunities for faculty via digitally-streamed video with accompanying instructional materials for improved learning.
Research findings will be shared at national conferences in the spring.
