FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Ohio Valley University are initiating a collaborative agreement regarding WVU Parkersburg’s Associate in Applied Science in Nursing degree.

The agreement will provide selected OVU students with access to WVU Parkersburg’s AAS degree. College officials indicate that the collaboration will aid in addressing the shortage of health care professionals in the region.

"We are pleased to collaborate with Ohio Valley University in this joint arrangement," noted WVU Parkersburg President Marie Foster Gnage. "The collaboration will make it possible for both institutions to impact the critical need for registered nurses in the Mid-Ohio Valley."

"This is an opportunity for students from both institutions to study together and we hope this will be the first of a number of partnerships between WVU Parkersburg and OVU," she added.

The agreement provides for the admission of eight OVU students to WVU Parkersburg’s Nursing program, beginning with the spring 2008 semester, in addition to the 40 WVU Parkersburg students who are admitted each semester.   OVU will fund a full-time Nursing faculty member for four semesters for each cohort of eight OVU students admitted and enrolled in the program.

"This is an historic event for OVU and we are thrilled to begin offering the program in conjunction with WVU Parkersburg," OVU President Dr. James A. Johnson said. "We are also very appreciative of Dr. Gnage and the WVU Parkersburg faculty’s work and believe this to be a win-win-win for OVU, WVUP and the community."

WVU Parkersburg's Nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing and approved by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses. It prepares students to assume entry-level staff nurse positions in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health-related institutions. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to take the registered nurse licensing examination.
