Kimes joins WVU Parkersburg as scholarship coordinator and AmeriCorps VISTA MOVERS staff member.CONTACT: Christopher Kimes, scholarship coordinator, 304-424-8383.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEChristopher Kimes has been appointed an AmeriCorps VISTA member with the Mid-Ohio Valley Educational Resources for Scholarships (MOVERS).
As a VISTA member, he will assist MOVERS in presenting scholarship information to local community members and maintaining its website. He also will serve as the scholarship coordinator for West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
MOVERS is an on-line program designed to assist families and students via a web site in their search for scholarship information in the Mid-Ohio Valley. A collaborative effort, the project began about five years ago when Parkersburg Area Community Foundation staff realized that there are many scholarships available which students and their parents are unaware of, noted Dotty Muir, dean of students at WVU Parkersburg.
"The MOVERS' web site makes it possible for students, parents and area school personnel to locate information regarding local scholarships," she added.
The web site, www.moversonline.org, serves as a one-stop location for area scholarship information. The site features a scholarship search, links to applications, high school counselor contacts, and other related information.
Additional information about the MOVERS' web site or how to locate scholarship resources is available by contacting Kimes at the college, (304) 424-8383.
Kimes is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College and Ohio Valley University. He currently is pursuing a master’s degree in educational leadership from West Virginia University.
The program is supported by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Verizon Foundation, Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, and Altrusa International Inc. of Parkersburg. Additional support is provided by WVU Parkersburg, the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation, and the guidance department at Parkersburg South High School.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) provides full-time staff to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies to create and expand programs that ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.
