College, Chamber of Commerce combine to offer "real world" classroom experience

West Virginia University at Parkersburg is offering a “real world” strategic
management class as part of a joint partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of
the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The college’s Business and Economics Division is offering GBUS 440 Business
Policy on Thursday evenings during the spring semester.
The Business Policy capstone course combines traditional instruction with the
experiences of local business leaders who serve as guest lecturers. The course
is a broad introduction of the Foundation in Strategic Management practices and
techniques exercised by local businesses leaders in managing their future.
“The objective of the course is to provide future and current business leaders
of the community and area residents with the practical aspect of strategic
management combined with core topics and current issues in the field,” said Sy
Sarkarat, chair of the college’s Business and Economics Division.
“The guest business lecturers will share their experiences and expertise to
bring the practical application of economic development into focus,” noted
George Kellenberger, Chamber president.
Topics of the guest instructors will include “Introduction to Foundations of
Strategic Management,” Charles L. "Chip" Pickering of Pickering Associates; “The
Internal Environment and Strategic Direction,” Gerard El Chaar, Vice President
of Distribution, Coldwater Creek; “Business Strategy,” Michael Hastings, General
Manager, Benson International, Mineral Wells; “Corporate Strategy,” Shawn
Draper, Vice President of Marketing, Woodcraft; ”Strategies in an International
Context,” Doug Kreinik, Owner and Secretary/Treasurer, Kreinik Manufacturing,
and “Strategic Control and Restructuring,” Steve Parks, Executive Director, Wood
County Habitat for Humanity.
