FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission has re-accredited the nursing program at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
The college’s Associate in Applied Science degree in Nursing received continuing national accreditation following a self-study assessment by the college’s Health Sciences Division and an on-site visit by an NLN accrediting team in September.
"The college has a strong commitment to addressing the area's nursing shortage" said Joseph L. Badgley, WVU Parkersburg interim president. "This national accreditation continuation demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards of nursing education."
As part of that commitment, WVU Parkersburg formed a partnership with four local hospitals in 2002 to impact the region’s critical need for more trained health care professionals. Partners include Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Marietta Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Selby General Hospital. As a result of the partnership, the college has upgraded its health science labs, hired additional faculty and accepted additional students into its health-related programs.
The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) is a specialized accrediting agency for all types of nursing education programs. The Commission approved its visitation team’s recommendation regarding the WVU Parkersburg associate program at its February meeting in New York City. The college is to file a focused report in two years.
WVU Parkersburg graduated its first nursing students in 1969 and received its initial NLN accreditation in 1973. In addition to the AAS degree in Nursing, WVU Parkersburg offers a certificate in Surgical Technology. Also, West Virginia University delivers its Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing to the Parkersburg campus.
