FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A West Virginia University at Parkersburg faculty member is among five semifinalists for the Faculty Merit Foundation’s Professor of the Year honors.

Edward Crisp, WVU Parkersburg professor of geology, is one of three West Virginia University faculty who are candidates for the state teaching award.

Others include Dr. James Arbogast, WVU professor of family medicine, School of Medicine, and Ronald Lewis, WVU professor of history, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. The other semifinalists are Judy Byers, professor of English at Fairmont State College, and John Cox, associate professor of history at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Crisp joined the WVU Parkersburg faculty in 1991 and attained the rank of professor in 2000. Before coming to Parkersburg, he taught at Morehead State University; Sue Bennett College in London, Ky.; and Texas A&M University at Galveston. He has also been an exploration geologist for Texaco and other oil companies.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University in 1969, a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and a doctorate from Indiana University in 1975.

Crisp takes a group of area college students on a paleontologic dig in Utah each summer as part of a field studies course in geology.

The semifinalists were chosen from a field of 14 professors nominated by their peers and students.

The top three finalists will be selected based upon interviews with the Foundation’s board of directors. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize, and the two runners-up $1,000 each. A $500 award will go to each of the two remaining finalists.

The Foundation will announce its selection for Professor of the Year in February.
