FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Virginia University at Parkersburg has been awarded a $36,850 grant to deliver its associate degree in criminal justice online.

It will be the first degree program WVU Parkersburg offers totally online.

The Parkersburg campus is sharing the grant in collaboration with Potomac State College of West Virginia University.

The grant funding will be used toward development of online delivery of WVU Parkersburg's associate in applied science degree in criminal justice. The college has offered the degree in a traditional classroom format since 1973.  WVU Parkersburg will collaborate with Potomac State College to deliver the degree via the web. The project includes a plan for shared course development and delivery, beginning in fall 2004.

"The degree program is designed for those already employed in the field of criminal justice who are interested in advancing their positions as well as for those attracted to criminal justice and homeland security career opportunities," noted Joseph L. Badgley, WVU Parkersburg interim president.

National statistics indicate employment in criminal justice-related fields is expected to increase faster than average for all occupations through 2010, Badgley added.

WVU Parkersburg's grant is among nearly $115,000 awarded by WVU and funded by the university's Extended Learning and the Provost's Office.  The grants are designed to encourage collaboration across WVU campuses to create more educational opportunities for students throughout the state. The goal is to create degree programs or related courses that lead to a defined program of study.

The grant competition was open to WVU system institutions, including the main campus in Morgantown, WVU Parkersburg, Potomac State College of WVU and WVU Institute of Technology.
