Nickel Creek, the critically acclaimed bluegrass trio, will perform back-to-back concerts Friday, August 24, at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

Two shows are scheduled; both the 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. shows are sold out.   Both shows will be held in the multi-purpose room. Opening for Nickel Creek will be local group Shhh-Bang.

Currently, this is the only Nickel Creek appearance scheduled for West Virginia.

Nickel Creek is performing to sold-out audiences all over the country and receiving critical praise for its rich, subtle harmonies and virtuosic abilities on violin, mandolin and guitar. Nickel Creek’s brother and sister Sean and Sara Watkins with childhood chum Chris Thile were named emerging artists of the year at the 11th annual International Bluegrass Music Awards in 2000. The May 28th issue of Time Magazine noted "… the trio is making down-home music relevant for a new generation."

Ranging in age from 19 to 24, the members of Nickel Creek have been playing together for a decade. Bluegrass fiddler prodigy Alison Krauss produced their Grammy-nominated, self-titled debut album. It features a melodic, layered sound which has been attracting a new set of listeners to the bluegrass/new grass sound.

The August 24th concert at WVU Parkersburg is part of the college’s welcome back activities for the fall semester. The Nickel Creek concert is being sponsored by WVU Parkersburg Student Activities, the campus Social Justice Program and WNUS.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show and 9:15 p.m. for the 9:30 concert.  There are no reserved seats.
