College Observes 40th Birthday

The unveiling of a new signature wall on Monday (Oct. 1) will kick off week-long activities, including a free Johnny Staats concert, in observance of the 40th birthday of West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

"This is an opportunity for us to reflect on the institution’s contributions to the Mid-Ohio Valley over the past 40 years as well as express our appreciation to area residents for their support of the college," Erik Bitterbaum, president of WVU Parkersburg, noted.

Dedication ceremonies will be held at 2 p.m., Monday (Oct. 1) for the college’s new brick signature wall, located on the lower campus lawn adjacent to Route 47. WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. will present remarks during the dedication which is open to the public. A reception will follow in the college’s Business, Industry and Development Services complex.

On Tuesday (Oct. 2), WVU Parkersburg students will enjoy a pizza party and free musical entertainment in the cafeteria.

WVU Parkersburg student Stephanie Tomlinson will discuss her study abroad experiences in Morocco at noon on Wednesday (Oct. 3) during the staff/faculty’s Brown Bag Lunch program series. A cake bake and decorate contest sponsored by Staff Council will be featured from noon to 2 p.m. in the main campus hallway.

Staff, faculty, alumni, campus retirees and friends of the college will join in a birthday/celebration lunch on Thursday (Oct. 4) in the multi-purpose room.

The music of Johnny Staats and the Delivery Boys will be featured Friday (Oct. 5) in a free concert, open to the public. The concert will be held at noon in the multi-purpose room. It is being presented under the auspices of the WVU President’s Office for Social Justice.

Concluding the week’s activities will be the college’s Theatre Department production of "Puss in Boots," at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday (Oct. 5-6) and 2 p.m., Sunday (Oct. 7). The production will be showcased in the college theater, Room 1305. Tickets are available in the college business office and will be sold at the door.

The college was established in 1961 as the Parkersburg Branch of WVU, became WVU-Parkersburg Center in 1966, was renamed Parkersburg Community College in 1971 and assumed its current name in 1989.
