West Virginia University at Parkersburg is offering a new class in Leadership Development and Community Service this spring that is designed to train area residents to assume leadership roles in the community.
SDEV 297 will meet on Thursdays from 4 to 6:45 p.m. The three-credit-hour course will integrate experiential exercises, contemporary readings on leadership, films and readings from the humanities and a community service component. Dorothy Bibbee, professor of journalism, is teaching the course.
"We will be stressing the belief that leaders are not born, they are nurtured," Mrs. Bibbee noted. "I want students to discover the leader within and then develop the leadership style that will make them effective leaders," she added.
She said the course will help bring clarity and understanding as to what leadership really is and how it can be used productively whether as a politician, teacher, parent or little league coach.
The college will be closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1. Registration for the spring semester resumes Jan. 2 and classes begin Jan. 8. For additional information, contact Mrs. Bibbee after Jan. 1 at 424-8247.
