Academic Dean, Chair Appointments Announced

Dr. Joseph Badgley is the new dean of academic affairs at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

Dr. Badgley had been serving as acting dean while a nationwide search was conducted for the position.

"I am delighted Dr. Badgley is assuming the dean’s position on a permanent basis, " WVU Parkersburg President Erik Bitterbaum said. "He brings experience and a keen academic perspective to the role."

Chair of the college’s Education Division since 1991, Dr. Badgley joined the faculty at WVU Parkersburg in 1974. He received his A.B. degree in education from Glenville State College, his master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and Education Psychology from West Virginia University and his Ed.D. in Early Childhood Education from WVU. He is a professor of education.

In related academic appointments, Cynthia Gissy, assistant professor of education, has been named interim chair of the Education Division while a national search is conducted to replace Dr. Badgley. Mrs. Gissy received her B.S. and M.A. from WVU. She has been at WVU Parkersburg since 1998.

Also, Dr. Saied Sarkarat, professor of economics, is serving as interim chair of the Business and Economics Division due to the chair‘s vacancy following Dr. Henry Lowenstein’s resignation to accept a similar position in California.

Dr. Sarkarat received his B.S., M.S. and M.A. from University of Wisconsin, and his Ph.D. from WVU. He has been at WVU Parkersburg since 1987. A nationwide search will commence during the fall semester.
