Saint Louis Brass Quintet in Concert

From Baroque to Dixieland jazz, the engaging Saint Louis Brass Quintet will bring its combination of fun and great music to West Virginia University at Parkersburg on Friday, March 24.

The 8 p.m. concert is part of the college’s Distinguished Performance Series and will be held in the multi-purpose room.

A St. Louis Brass Quintet concert begins as any concert might but as it moves along the music gets lighter and the ensemble presents the humorous demonstrations for which it is famous. The members combine professionalism and showmanship in performing a wide variety of musical styles. The ensemble’s virtuoso brass performers bring pleasure to their craft as they perform and discuss music covering a wide spectrum and present a tongue-in-cheek history of the brass instruments from the time of King Tut to the present.

One of the mid-America’s most entertaining chamber music groups, the quintet combines great music for brass from the Renaissance, Baroque and 20^th Century with hilarious renditions of "neglected" instruments (cow’s horn, conch shell, bugle and garden hose). Originally made up of members of the St. Louis Symphony, today the players come from across the Untied States and were founding members of Summit Brass – "America’s Own" large brass ensemble.

The Saint Louis Brass Quintet is one of America’s oldest continuing brass quintets performing throughout the United States along with recent tours of Japan and Mexico, concerts in India, and an appearance at the Stavanger Brass Festival in Norway.

Tickets for the concert are available in the college business office for $10, adults; $5, students, and $2 in advance for WVU Parkersburg faculty, staff and students. Any remaining tickets will go on sale at the door at 7 p.m., March 24.

The series is made possible by financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and National Endowment of the Arts with approval by the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, University System Board of Trustees social justice program, WVU at Parkersburg academic affairs, and student activity fee.
