News Release

The Swiss German film, "Journey of Hope," will be presented Friday (March 9) at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

Showtime is 7 p.m. in the Caperton Center for Applied Technology auditorium on the WVU Parkersburg campus. The film presentation is free and open to the public.

An Academy Award-winning movie, "Journey of Hope" is based on the true story of villagers in Turkey dreaming of a "paradise" in Switzerland and setting off to emigrate illegally. Because they are at the mercy of smugglers, they lose their possessions and their money by the time they reach the Swiss borders but they continue their perilous journey toward the promise of a new life. A 1991 release, the 111-minute film is in German with English subtitles.

Dr. Nancy Nanney, chair of the Humanities Division, which sponsors the Foreign Language Film Series, will moderate an in-depth discussion of the film following its showing.

Additional information about the film is available by contacting film series coordinator R.A. Oldaker at 424-8297.
