JCC OFFERS NEW SPRING SEMESTER COURSES

Several new and exciting courses are being offered for the spring semester at West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s Jackson County Center, including courses designed to meet busy lifestyles.

Among them are:

RELI 341 Religions of the World will meet on Monday nights from 7-9:45 p.m.

Three JCC courses are "e-courses" meaning they will be taught completely over the Internet.

History Professor George Lamb's HIST 121, U.S. History Through the Civil War, will meet on six Tuesdays from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. for discussion. Business Professor Pam Braden will teach GBUS 111, Introduction to Business, and MKTG 311, Principles of Marketing, using the Internet and a textbook with no class meetings required.

"These courses work well for some students who have difficulty meeting regular class schedules due to work or family commitments," noted Ms. Braden, who is also JCC director.

"A number of our JCC courses are being offered as Alternate Delivery System (ADS) courses -- meaning they will not meet the traditional 15 weeks," she added.

There are also several Technology Enhanced Courses (TEC) available that require some level of technical expertise (use of the Internet, keyboarding and computer skills).

Robert Cordell, associate professor of social science, is offering a special topics history course entitled "The Great Depression" in an ADS format. Dr. Lamb is teaching a Nazi Germany (HIST 333) course on Tuesday nights, 7-9:45 p.m.

Tanya Ball, instructor of business technology, will teach a special topics course on Microsoft Excel 2000 for those who wish to learn the ins and outs of spreadsheet development and management. She is also teaching Web Page Development using Microsoft Front Page 2000.

Christine Post, JCC student services coordinator, will teach Job Search Techniques on Fridays as an ADS course that will be helpful to students who are about to graduate or who are looking for work while in school. The course will cover resumes, interviewing, and other job search techniques.

A course in Medical Billing is being offered for those who wish to learn to communicate with insurance companies from medical providers.

Business Math is being offered at the Roane Jackson Tech Center on Tuesday evenings from 6-8:45 p.m. and might be helpful to those who live in the Spencer area or who need that course as a night class, noted Ms. Braden.

Spring semester classes begin Jan. 8. The Parkersburg campus and JCC will be closed through Jan. 1 for the holidays. Both campuses reopen Jan. 2 and spring semester registration resumes then as well.
