Mid-Ohio Valley Tech-Prep Consortium

Those attending were:  Mike Boyd, Joe Smith, Doug Kiger, Connie Dziagwa, Bill Niday, Susan Moran, Paul Milhoan, Margaret Bailey, Joyce Okes, David Boggs, Dennis Carpenter, Carl Smith, Tina Buchanan, John Gorrell, Violet Mosser, Diane Braun, Rick Coffman, Joe Badgley, Marie Foster Gnage, and Patsy Bee.

 

Special Guest: President Gnage introduced Nancy Laprade who was appointed to work on a legislative study for Career Technical Education.  She is visiting each of the Consortium throughout the state to gather information for the study and to see how each of the consortium are working.  Consortium members were provided with a copy of the state code on Community and Technical College Consortia Planning Districts.  Ms. Laprade reviewed and asked questions on each of the items listed in state code: 18B-3C-4.

 

Call to Order:

Dr. Marie Foster Gnage, President at WVU Parkersburg and Facilitator of the Mid-Ohio Valley Community and Technical College Consortium, called the meeting to order and presented the agenda.

 

Approval of Minutes:

The minutes of the February   meeting of the Mid-Ohio Valley Community and Technical College Consortium and Mid-Ohio Valley Tech-Prep Consortium were approved upon a motion by Ms. Dziagwa and Mr. Milhoan.

 

CTC Consortium (Dr. Marie Foster Gnage)

College Transition Initiative -  Violet Mosser reported that everything is going well.  She noted that they are planning an educational trip to Blennerhassett Island, and the are identifying schools for participation in next year’s program.

 

Career Academies. 

 

Grant and Legislative Updates.  Joyce Okes provided information on a long term health care grants that are available.  There are a total of six grants being awarded in the amount of $600,000 each.  The WV . . is looking at submitting a proposal .  The grant is due April 5 and she would like to meet with an Advisory groups to discuss the possibilities.  Call Joyce if anyone is interested in participating.

 

Tech-Prep Consortium (Diane Braun)

 

Budget:  Mrs. Braun provided copies of the budget report.  She made the recommendation that funds for the summer academies be taken from current funds rather than carry-over.  Ms. Dziagwa made a motion that funds to support Summer Academies be taken from current funds.  Mr. Smith seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

During the current month, $5,000 in grants has been provided to Jackson Jr. High, Hamilton Jr. High, Pleasant County Middle School, Ripley High School, and Van Devender Jr. High School for parent handbooks.  FAFSA workshops expenses totaled $1250.  Grants have requested from schools in Williamstown and Blennerhassett.  Schools that have not applied include Ritchie County and Ravenswood.

 

Mr. Braun provided information on the computer and projector that to be purchased for the Tech-Prep Coordinator.  Ms. Dziagwa made a motion to proceed with the purchase of the equipment.  Dr. Badgley seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

Mrs. Braun reported a carryover balance of $18,516.59.

 

Management Plan.  Ms. Braun reviewed and Consortium members discussed the Management Plan included funs for target areas, EDGE Coordinators, Parental Workshops, Regional Guidance Counselor Workshops, Consortium Guidance Counselor’s Council, Technical Assistance to Consortium counties and WVU Parkersburg, Coordinators Salary, and Administer Grant (travel, supplies, Consortium Committee).  Ms. Braun noted that most funds will be depleted by the end of the year.  

 

Management Plan 2007-2008 – In reviewing this year’s plan, it was suggested that Emergency Services be added as a target area for next year.  It was also suggested that there is a need to focus more on CTC and secondary counselor collaborations.  Dr. Gnage suggested that a goal for next year would be to connect with parents.   Ms. Braun noted that she will know next month after they have received instructions at their next meeting.  She requested that Consortium members bring their copy of their plan with notes to the next meeting.

 

Plans for Juniors this Spring

Ms. Braun noted that she will be preparing a letter to parents of seniors in tech schools for next fall.  She provided a Grade 12 checklist for college planning.  She asked members to review and add or delete.  She will check on price for mailing once the flyer is finalized.

With no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned.  The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at noon in the Community Room at WVU Parkersburg.
