Mid-Ohio Valley Tech-Prep Consortium

 

 

Those attending were:  David Boggs, Joe Smith, Doug Kiger, Tina Buchanan, Mike Boyd, John Gorrell, Danita Brown, Susan Morran, Joyce Okes, Joe Super, Violet Mosser, Kellie Swisher, Paul Milhoan, Dennis Carpenter, Jim Mahan, Connie Dziagwa, Rhonda Richards, Diane Braun, Marie Foster Gnage, and Patsy Bee.

 

Call to Order:

Dr. Marie Foster Gnage, President of West Virginia University at Parkersburg called the meeting to order and presented the agenda as the Facilitator of the Mid-Ohio Valley Community and Technical College Consortium.

 

Approval of Minutes:

The minutes of the September 11, 2007 meeting of the Mid-Ohio Valley Community and Technical College Consortium and Mid-Ohio Valley Tech-Prep Consortium were approved upon a motion by Dr. Super and second Mr. Mahan.

 

CTC Consortium (Dr. Gnage)

President Gnage reported that she and others from the college and Wood County School System met with Benedum Foundation President Jim Denova and his representatives to discuss how the Caperton Center for Applied Technology may be used as a model for replicating programs and operations.

 

President Gnage also reported that as a Rotarian, she had the opportunity to speak at the Adult Basic Education class where she discussed the importance of the connectivity between programs (career ladder).

 

President Gnage introduced Dr. Danita Brown, Interim Dean of Students.

 

College Transition Initiative

Ms. Mosser reported that she has met with all the schools and parents.  All workshops have been finished and testing has been completed.  Students will be tested again at the end of their 10th grade year.  There are a total of 31 students participating this year, and Roane County will begin in the Spring.  The challenge this year is to keep students involved in PassKeys.  Ms. Mosser asked Consortium members to provide any suggestions and/or recommendations for PassKeys to her or Dr. Richards.

 

Review Strategies/Responsibilities of the Consortium

President Gnage provided Consortium members with a copy of the 2007-2008 Strategies for Institutional and Consortium Compact that is submitted to the Community and Technical College System.  She reviewed the goals and strategies, discussed responsibilities of the group, and how they can assist in developing new strategies.  This will be discussed more throughout the year.

 

Progress on Strategies

College Update:  

Dr. Richards reported that WVU Parkersburg is developing career pathways that start in high school and continue through college.  She provided a handout of courses that can be given EDGE credit by beginning in high schools and continuing through college.  She asked Consortium members to review.  Her goal is to develop something that would take the program beyond where it is at present.  She added that she would like to add associate, baccalaureate and even master level programs that students could receive.

 

Dr. Richards also reported that the college is working on several grants.  There are two grants with the Department of Labor, Fulbright Scholar grant, and Safe Schools grant that are all due by the end of October.

 

Dr. Richards reported that mid-term online classes have started that will allow students to take a series of courses over an eight week period.  These courses include: English, Psychology, US History, Computer Science, and Study Skills.  All classes are scheduled online, and information on the classes has been sent to counselors, superintendents and principals.


President Gnage added that eighty-four EDGE students are enrolled at WVU Parkersburg this year.  WVU Parkersburg Advising Center will be contacting students to make sure they receive EDGE credit.

 

School District Update

Mr. Boyd reported on the importance of a Safety Committee and law enforcement officers serving on the Safety Committee as they have discovered with the recent bomb threats.

 

Mr. Smith reported that an administrative support program currently at the Wood County Tech Center that will work with their business program at the Caperton Center will begin next year.

 

Workforce Investment  Board Update

Mrs. Okes reported they have been working with individuals that have lost employment.  There are career fairs scheduled for tomorrow, and one-stop shop services available for those in need.

 

Tech-Prep Consortium (Diane Braun)

 

NTPN Meeting

Mrs. Braun reported that the NTPN conference will begin on Thursday, October 11.

 


 

Site  Coordinators

Mrs. Braun reported that all Site Coordinators have been trained except three.  The following Site Coordinators were presented to the Consortium for approval:

 

Elaine Tice, Parkersburg High School

Shelly Updegrave, Ravenswood High School

Violet Mosser, WVU Parkersburg

 

Mr. Mahan made a motion that the Site Coordinators be approved.  Mr. Kiger seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

Activities for Tech Schools

Mrs. Braun provided information to Consortium members on Pass Keys and noted that every student has a pass code.  She noted that each tech school will be provided $2,000 for remediation that uses PassKeys.

 

Janice McCue joined the meeting and also provided some additional information on PassKeys for Consortium members to review.

 

New Business

 

Dr. Super noted that it would no longer be possible for Pleasants County to hold the surplus funds for Tech-Prep.  President Gnage made a motion WVU Parkersburg be the center for holding funds.  Dr. Super seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

 

Next Meeting

 

The next Consortium meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at noon in the Community Room.
