Building Coordinator Training Dave White gave the training update. He announced that during the September meeting, the coordinators were assigned areas to cover during an emergency. He also read a list of items to be purchased for shelter-in-place and asked for any additions. Jan Miller noted that a first-aid kit was not on the list. Aaron Crites suggested that a regular radio would be comforting—a crank radio would work well. Cathy Mutz suggested LL Bean. Dave stated that the food/water will be rotated so they stay fresh and that the items close to expiration would be given away. Al Collins suggested using daylight savings time as a reminder.
AED Training Craig Rabatin asked about the status of AED training. Al Collins stated that he is fully trained, and Vince, Tom, and J.B. were trained as well (so evening/special events would have coverage). Al added that all security guards will be trained.

Conference Al Collins, John Gorrell, Dave White, and Michelle are attending the September 20th Campus Security Conference at WV State University. Safety committee members were invited to attend as well.
MOV Tabletop Michelle Bissell stated that President Gnage had attended a Pandemic Flu tabletop exercise facilitated by the MOV Health Dept. After the exercise, suggestions were given to improve the response. President Gnage asked the safety committee to look at the following recommendation:
“School counselors should develop and implement a formal program that addresses severe illness and death associated with catastrophic events.”
Cathy Mutz stated that she, Christine Post, and Truman Long had been trained in Critical Incident Stress Management, but a large scale event would need community assistance. Dave White noted that the trained in-house counselors could be affected by the flu/crisis and we might need outside help. Aaron Crites stated that we needed to identify the in-house people and their role.
For an outside source, Cathy Mutz suggested Westbrook. Allison Sayre stated that MOV Mental Health also has counseling services. Michelle is working on an agreement to renew employee counseling service through the Counseling & Wellness Center. That contract could possibly include an emergency provision.
Judy Higgs said the she and Phil McClung were investigating an outside counseling source for students.
Emergency Preparedness Month Michelle Bissell noted that an article about National Preparedness Month was included in the packets. She stated that the main page of the Safety website was updated to include the information and a link to the government’s preparedness website (ready.gov). She suggested working with SGA to setup a table during one of the engagement hours this month with printouts of supply checklists and emergency plans available. Cathy Mutz suggested checking with Jim Rose to see if he has any brochures.
Wellness Coordinator Allison Sayre is the new Wellness Coordinator. She stated that her role is not clear—a staff member brought a woman in for treatment, and Allison is not authorized to give treatment. Judy Higgs noted that the culture of the campus has to change, and the message about Allison’s role should be shared. Jan Miller suggested putting an article in the Chronicle to help spread the word. President Gnage announced that a letter will be going out. Allison stated that she is planning a meet and greet. She added that she does have supplies in her office. Judy Higgs suggested using the supplies to restock first aid kits. Dave White stated that in the welding area burn cream is available for students, but the students must take it and apply it themselves. He stated that it released liability that way.
Emergency Phones Aaron Crites stated that he heard emergency phones in the parking lots were considered at one point. Dave White said that they were talked about, but they were $5,000-$15,000 each. President Gnage said they were put on the want list, and that currently we depend on security patrolling the lots, proper lighting, and cell phones.
Aaron Crites stated that the far end of the lower parking lot was not well lit and some female students were nervous about the area. He also stated that faculty were encouraged to have more evening classes by the Executive Dean. President Gnage stated that an audit from Morgantown looked at lighting. Dave White noted that two lights had been added. More lights will be put on the list to hopefully add to the budget next year.
President Gnage added that she would like to see research on the red phones. Jan Miller suggested utilizing criminal justice students to monitor the lots. Al Collins stated that they only have four students. President Gnage asked Al to check on using students to beef up evening watch. Al stated that the students during the day were volunteers and he would try to use work study money to get more participation from 6-9pm. Dave White suggested reflective vests for the students to make them more visible. Al stated that they are looking at similar items. He added that when the new person is added to security, two people will be here at all times. He also noted that they are also switching from the car to a truck to increase visibility while monitoring the lots.
Clause in Syllabus Aaron Crites suggested providing faculty a uniform safety clause to put in their syllabi. Cathy Mutz noted that she didn’t think many faculty members were using the syllabus statement that had been recommended by the Safety Committee during the Fall 2006 In-Service. President Gnage stated that it should be emphasized during inservice and Dr. Richards should be advised to have Dean’s Council require it be included in the syllabus and announced. President Gnage added that exit announcements should be enforced at events.
Cathy Mutz noted that some classrooms don’t have posted evacuation routes. Dave White said that Dave Gates is taking a CAD class to be able to do the signs. He also stated that faculty need to be aware of their surroundings.

Announcements |
Jan Miller requested a copy of the building coordinator cell phone numbers.
President Gnage announced that during a shelter-in-place, people would not be allowed to leave after the doors were sealed. Opening the seal would endanger others. The policy needs to be amended.
