Safety Committee Meeting Minutes
Thursday, September 9, 2004
10:00 a.m.
President’s Conference Room
Those present were: Bill Brown, Chair, Marie Foster Gnage, Cathy Mutz, Christine Post, Suzanne Dietz, Dave Cuningham, Gary Waggoner, Lennie, Craig Rabatin, Dan Williamson and Patsy Bee
Absent were: Joe Badgley, Mary Lott, Charlene McNulty, and Lennie Moore.
Minutes of the April 8, 2004 meeting were approved upon a motion by Cathy Mutz and second by Suzanne Deitz.
Copies of the Safety Committee On-Going Projects were distributed and reviewed. Completed projects at Jackson County Center include implementation of practice fire drills during each semester. Also completed was establishing a person/procedures for daily checking the handicap doors.
Establishing professional guidance seminars for staff/faculty relating to emergency procedures to assist disabled students or employees was discussed for both campuses. After some discussion, President Gnage announced that seminars will be mandatory for designated first responders.
There was also a discussion regarding fire drills on the main campus. It was noted that it is mandatory for fire drills in the Caperton Center because of high school students. President Gnage directed that the main campus will also have fire drills each semester. The first drill will be announced and the second will be a surprise.
Projects completed on the main campus included:
Set up yearly or bi-yearly time to change batteries in handicap doors operators (e.g. during standard/daylight savings time changes).
Establish person/procedures for daily checking of handicap doors (this responsibility would also require posting a sign instructing people to another accessible door if a door is not working properly.)
Update current emergency telephone numbers.
Provide emergency air horns (this is completed in the Caperton Center)
Add steps at the welding exit doors in the TechWing.
Other projects discussed included:
Evaluating the use, need and cost of an emergency phone outside the main area of the building (e.g. direct phone to emergency service directory) – President Gnage will discuss with Connie Dziagwa.
Post emergency exit information in all classrooms – David Cunningham is developing new maps of the college.
Shelter in place – Caperton Center has designated the auditorium, but the main campus has not yet designated an area of safety. President Gnage announced that there should be in-house training so that employees can direct students to a safe area and the area needs to be identified.
Post Emergency Numbers – David Cunningham will take care of this.
President Gnage explained that there needs to be a comprehensive emergency response plan. She, Cathy Mutz and David Cunningham will work on something for the group to review.
President Gnage also explained that the Safety Committee is a very important Committee in overseeing that the college is in compliance with regulations and policies. The Committee needs to identify areas of safety issues, environmental safety issues, computer security, etc. – anything that could put the institution in danger. She noted that the committee needs a list of all compliance requirements, and will address all issues once we know what they are. She explained that our Strategic Plan will have a goal that will address safety. She asked committee members to bring concerns/observations to the next meeting. She noted that there should be OSHA training once a year. She requested that the Safety Committee meet in October and November. The Committee agreed that Friday’s at 9:00 a.m. would work for everyone.
With no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned. Updated On-Going Projects for the Safety Committee will be prepared for the next meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Patsy J. Bee
Executive Secretary to the President
