Safety Committee
September 19, 2002
President’ Conference Room
11:00 a.m.
Those present were: Erik Bitterbaum, Bill Brown, Dave Cunningham, Bill Douglas, Lennie Moore, Craig Rabatin, Gary Waggoner, and Sheryl Elder. Absent were: Joe Badgley, Gene Dulaney, Charlene McNulty, Cathy Mutz, and Christine Post.
Opening remarks by Pres. Erik Bitterbaum provided examples of colleges that were not prepared for an emergency during last year’s 9/11 tragedy. The purpose of this committee should be to first brainstorm –
What to do in an emergency situation:
- Suggestion/ 1 page document listing who, what and how/emergency procedures to follow
a) Should include initial meeting place for responsible parties after disaster has occurred (e.g. 1st) President’s Conference Rm, 2nd) Bids Bldg. 3rd) Caperton Center, and 4th) Off campus site
b) Should include a "call tree" to enable quick notification
to faculty/staff and students
c) Should include a plan of how to get back to normal operation
after emergency
d) Should include established time limits for when the college
would need to extend class schedule to make up for lost time
It was noted that the framework for the above emergency plans are already in place.
It was also decided that the current policies would be reviewed by members of this committee, as well as the Cabinet members, to see what revisions/ additions are needed.
Other agenda included:
A discussion of a need for any type of safety training (e.g. Forklift training which was completed last spring.)
1. A need for an refresher course in Science Lab procedures was mentioned by G. Waggoner (contact Kathy Powell/Dr. Nagle for Friday afternoon training)
Using any of the training resources available through the WVU Morgantown Campus
Mention of IDT 312 OSCHA course (equipment check) suggested Bill Brown
D. Cunningham reported that our campus was underneath the threshold for the multiple spills (gallon count)
A need to clarify the correct emergency contact for our campus. Zero is the appropriate number (switchboard) who in turn dispatch the emergency call to the proper cell number
