Planning Council

Those present were: Marie Foster Gnage, Connie Dziagwa, Mary Beth Busch, John Gorrell, Dave White, Danita Brown, Denise McClung, Rhonda Richards, Jenny Keup, Janice McCue, Curt Fulmer, Elizabeth Baker, Charles Almond and Patsy Bee.  Absent were:  Jennifer Hitt, Jason Stark, and Jan Miller.

 

Updates:

 

·         Community Leaders Reception/Tour will be held today at 4:00 p.m.  There will be a Donors Reception on May 1 at 5:00 p.m.  The honors college will be holding its reception at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.

·         Student Services is looking at disbursement for Financial Aid.  Checks will be mailed to students until an electronic processe can be finalized.

·         The Higher Learning Commission will be visiting our campus on May 5 and May 6  to review the new online programs.

·         An Adult Basic Education employee has been added to the Learning Center to better serve the adult students.

·         The release of “The Economic Impact Study” shows that for every dollar appropriated to WVU Parkersburg, there is $10 in economic activity back into the community.  President Gnage added that there is a need to look the impact on the area during our Strategic Planning.

·         President Gnage provided a Legislative update and noted that she will send out an update that summarizes all the budgetary bills.  She also reported on Vision 20/20 which is a new accountability system for higher education, and the appropriations bill for capital projects for the Child Development Center and Technology Building.

 

Change of Name for Council:

President Gnage announced that the Planning Council name will be changed to: “Institutional Effectiveness Council.”   The name will better emphasize Council’s role in implementing processes and reviewing outcomes.

 

Compact Strategies for 2008-2009 (Due April 30, 2008):

Dr. Richards reviewed the final draft of the Compact Strategies for 2008-2009 with Council members and discussed suggested final changes.  The Compact will be submitted to the WV Council for Community and Technical Colleges on April 30.

 

Planning Strategies Schedule for Input for Next Strategic Plan:

President Gnage asked Council to discuss and determine schedule for developing the next Strategic Plan.  Suggestions included:

 

·       Use questions developed by the Leadership Academy

o   What change would you make to better prepare students/graduates to enter the workforce?

o   What do you see as the greatest educational need in this community over the next ten years?

o   What is the best way for the college to engage with our community?

o   If you were responsible for WVU-P what is the one change you would make?

·         Fall 2009 should be the kick off for the next Five-Year Plan.

·         Look at plan and send back out for review.

·         Begin process of gathering information by October 2008 - all advisory committees meet in October.

·         Go to all counties and hold focus group sessions.

·         Consortium members can to facilitate different areas.

·         The Survey Monkey can be used in Wood County

·         Need to identify pre-existing groups: Boards of Education, County Commissions, etc.

·         Run ad for all others.


Responsibility for Groups:

·         Advisory Council for AAS Programs – Division Chairs – Rhonda Richards

·         County Commissions – Mary Beth Busch

·         School Boards -   Denise McClung

·         Consortium – President Gnage

·         Invite opinion in news ad  - Connie Dziagwa

·         Responsibility for online survey – Connie Dziagwa/Curt Fulmer (work on survey monkey tool)

·         Focus groups on campus – Faculty Senate/Staff Council/Student Government Chairs should meet and gather information of their groups

·         Roane/Jackson Counties – John Gorrell

·         Chamber of Commerce – Rhonda Richards

Other suggestions included:

·         Test Survey at In-Service

·         Survey All RBA Students

·         Set up tables in cafeteria for gathering information from students.

·         Look at expanding Strategic Planning Council to include a member of Board of Governors, Foundation Board, Community representative one representative from each of the county commissions for 1 meeting per month.

·         Letters of invitation to serve on Strategic Planning Council need to be sent out within the next month.  Part of Council needs to meet once monthly with the Strategic Planning Council.

 

Let President Gnage know if you want to take responsibility for any of the groups.

 

Code of Ethics:

President Gnage asked each member of Council to provide suggested list of code of ethics for campus community to Patsy Bee and she will provide list for Council to review.
