The meeting was called to order by Joe Campbell, Chair.  Those present were; Joseph Badgley, Interim President WVU Parkersburg; James Hayhurst, Executive Vice President United Bankshares, Inc.; Joe Campbell, Vice President WesBanco; William Niday, Superintendent Wood County Schools;  Tony Playtis, Environmental Health Coordinator E. I. Dupont; Greg Smith, President and CEO Mountain State Blue Cross & Blue Shield; Linda Dickirson, Jackson County Representative; Joyce Okes, Program Director Workforce Investment Board; Michael Hastings, General Manager Benson International; George Kellenberger, Chamber of Commerce; President, Jim Mylott, Executive Director Mid Ohio Valley Regional Council; Robert D'Avria, Consultant YMCA of the USA; Cindy Kelley, Faculty Representative; Violet Mosser, Staff Representative; Mike Howerton, Student Representative, and Patsy Bee, Executive Secretary to the President.   Absent was: Trudy Seita Consultant/Trainer.

 

Chairman Campbell called the meeting to order.  He welcomed and introduced Mike Howerton, the new student representative to the Board of Advisors.  He announced that the next regular meeting for the Board of Advisors is scheduled for May 17, and that the purpose of today’s meeting is as the Presidential Search Committee to review and approve candidates to be interviewed for the position of Campus President at West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Regional Vice President at West Virginia University.  The three finalists are:  Dr. Harry R. Faulk from Fairmont State College in West Virginia, Dr. Curtis C. Smith from California University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Marie Foster Gnage from Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey.  Resumes for each candidate were provided in advance for Board members to review. 

 

Chairman Campbell introduced Dr. Ragina Copeland and Dr. Vijay Shah two faculty members selected to serve on the Screening Committee with Board members Michael Hastings, William Niday, Violet Mosser, Cindy Kelley, and Mike Howerton.  Chairman Campbell and C. B. Wilson, Associate Provost at West Virginia University serve as Co-Chairs of the Committee. LuAnne Moore from West Virginia University serves as the Social Justice representative.

 

Also attending today’s meeting were Connie Dziagwa, Executive Director for Communications and Public Relations, and Debbie Richards, Sr. Administrative Assistant to the President, who is assisting the screening committee by providing staff support. 

 

Next, Chairman Campbell reviewed the search process.  The position was advertised through the Chronicle of Higher Education and the American Association of Community Colleges.  Sixty applications were reviewed by the screening committee and eight candidates were selected for telephone interviews.  Each candidate was interviewed for thirty minutes, and the screening committee was able to select three finalists for recommendation to the Board of Advisors.  Once approved by the Board, each candidate will be brought to WVU Parkersburg campus for interviews and will also be interviewed at the Morgantown campus by President Hardesty and Provost Lang.  The finalists will also be interviewed by selected members of the WV Council for Community and Technical Colleges.  Once this process is complete, the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate will be submitted to President Hardesty and he will make the final recommendation.  Each member of the Board of Advisors will be invited to attend dinner with each of the candidates for the interview process.

 

After some discussion, Mr. D’Avria made a motion to accept the three finalists proposed by the Screening Committee.  Mr. Hayhurst seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

Chairman Campbell noted that confirmed itineraries will be sent to Board members.  It was requested that future information also be sent to Board members by email.  The Chairman requested that Board members provide Patsy Bee with current email addresses.
