OCTOBER
"Windtalkers"
Students, faculty and staff are invited to see the movie,
"Windtalkers," to be shown in the college theatre during the 11:00
a.m. Engagement Hour with the first half of the movie to be shown on
November 6 and the second half on November 8. The movie is being
shown in observance of National American Indian Heritage Month and
in honor of our Veterans, as part of a series sponsored by the WVU-P
Social Justice Committee. This World War II adventure is a story
about the one wartime code never broken by the enemy, the Navajo
Code. (The movie is rated R for pervasive graphic war violence and

Employee of the Month for November.
Congratulations to Vince Plummer, Campus Service
Worker, who has been selected as Employee of the Month for
November! Vince has been a member of the West Virginia University
at Parkersburg staff for nine years. He began working

in 1997 as a Security Guard. In 1999 he transferred to the Physical
Plant where he continues to work. In addition to his work at West
Virginia University at Parkersburg, Vince also works part –time for
Best Way Equipment and Supply. Vince and his wife Veda live in
Mineral Wells. They have four children, Tiffany - 21, Bub – 20,
Amber – 19, and Brandon – 18. He has two brothers and two sisters.
Following is an excerpt from the nominations
that served as the basis for Vince’s selection as Employee of the
Month:
“I would like to
nominate Vince Plummer for the November Employee of the Month.
Vince works very diligently to keep all the offices in the banana
wing nice and neat. He always does it with a smile and tries to
accommodate everyone’s evening schedules. He is a very positive
person with great work ethics. Thank you for considering Vince for
a job well done.”
“I would like to nominate Vince Plummer for
employee of the month. Vince goes above and beyond the call of
duty. He is always friendly, nice and very trustworthy.”
“I would like to
nominate Vince Plummer for Employee of the Month. Vince is always
very conscientious about his job. He always goes the extra mile to
keep our offices in tip-top shape. Vince is very DEPENDABLE. You
can always be sure that when you come to work in the morning that
your office is clean. He is always going above and beyond what
needs to be done. I nominate Vince very highly for employee of the
month."

Evening of Poetry Nov. 6th. WVU-P's Humanities Speakers Series presents an evening of poetry
with Scott Luter and John Hoppenthaler on November 6th at 7 pm in
Room 2536 at the Parkersburg Campus. Luter and Hoppenthaler are the
English Department's newest full-time instructors. Luter received
his MFA in Creative writing from Georgia College & State University,
where he was Assistant Editor for Arts & Letters: A Journal of
Contemporary Culture. His poetry has appeared in Poem, Open 24
Hours, and elsewhere. He is a recipient of an Academy of American
Poets University Prize. Hoppenthaler is the author of two books of
poetry, Lives Of Water (2003) and the forthcoming Anticipate the
Coming Reservoir, both titles from Carnegie Mellon University Press.
Poetry Editor of Kestrel, his honors include an Individual Artist
Grant from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and Residency
Fellowships to the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the
Creative Arts. He is also included on the Literary Map of West
Virginia. For nine years, he was Personal Assistant to the Nobel
Prize winning author, Toni Morrison. Admission is free and open to
the public. Refreshments will be available, and books will be

Pizza Project. Doesn't pizza sound good for Wednesday's dinner? Pizza Hut will
donate 15% of sales to the WVU-P RELAY FOR LIFE team. You can dine
in or carry out from 5-9, November 1st at the Southside Pizza Hut.

Free Demonstration Oct. 26th.
The Technology Division will demonstrate its newest equipment, a SawStop Table/cabinet saw in a free demonstration, Thursday, Oct.
26. Tom Lemon, instructor of maintenance technologies and
coordinator of Industrial Maintenance and Multi-Craft Technician
Programs, will conduct the demo at 4 p.m. in Room 0112 (the
Industrial Maintenance shop). SawStop's 10” cabinet saw
was developed from the ground up with a particular focus on safety
and quality. It features a revolutionary safety system that stops
and retracts the blade (within 5 milliseconds) upon accidental
contact, drastically reducing the severity of user injury. The
safety system provides invisible protection (doesn't interfere with

A presentation on STD/HIV Prevention will be held at 11
a.m., October 30, in the multi-purpose room. Learn how to protect

Flu Shots. Flu shots will be given by the Mid-Ohio Valley Health
Dept when the vaccine is ready. Register with the Health and
Wellness Center if you wish to get a flu shot. Only those who
register will be notified of the day and time the Health Dept will

Magical Night Tickets.
Staff
Council is selling Magical Night of Giving Tickets. This event is on
Sunday, November 6, 2006 at the GCM from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All
proceeds from the sale of tickets benefit Staff Council activities
and projects. Tickets are $5.00 each and may be purchased from
either Karen Branham or Pat Mollohan. Ticket sales end on Friday,
Nov. 4.

Live Seminar Oct. 19th. A
live interactive online seminar, "Creating and Maintaining a Climate
of Civility on Campus," is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, from
1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in Room 2538. WVUP's registration for the seminar
has been paid for by the Social Justice budget. Faculty and staff
who would like to attend are asked to register so that we can plan
for sufficient copies of the conference materials to be available.

Film to be Shown Oct. 19th.
The film, "King Gimp," will be shown in the main
student lounge on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 11:00 to 11:50 a.m. The
film is part of a series of special awareness films sponsored by the
Social Justice Committee. The film is about the life of Dan
Keplinger who was born with cerebral palsy. Popcorn and soft drinks
will be sold by the student Criminal Justice Organization.

Seats Available for Amish Tour.
Plenty of seats are still available for
the Social Justice sponsored Ohio Amish Country Tour scheduled for
Friday, October 20. The opportunity is now open to anyone age 18 or
older (not just to WVU-P students and employees). Cost is $40. To

Special Presentations Oct. 18th.
Two special presentations are scheduled
for Wednesday, October 18, in the Auditorium as part of the campus
Diversity Week celebration. During the Engagement Hour (11:00 a.m.),
Roy Forman, Deputy Director of the WV Commission for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing, will discuss issues affecting the deaf and hard of
hearing in higher education. At 1:30, Marlo Hornsby, President of
the WV Chapter of Little People of America, will talk about "Life as
a Little Person." Accompanying her will be Diana Sova, Vice

Power Team on Campus Oct. 17.
The Power Team will be on campus on Tuesday Oct. 17, at 12:30
p.m. Key issues that they address are: drug and alcohol abuse,
suicide and peer pressure, academic excellence, personal
achievement, and more.... They have included WVU-P on their program
list of schools because we have had them on campus in the past.

Appalachian Heritage Day.
The 4th Annual Appalachian Heritage Day will be from 10 am-2 pm,
Thursday, Oct. 12. Activities will take place in the multipurpose
room and various other areas around the campus. Special
presentations will occur in the theatre and in Rooms 2536 and
2538. The traditional marshmallow roast and ghost stories
around the bonfire will be at 7pm (weather permitting) in the back
lawn near the cafeteria. Everyone is encouraged to

PTK Project.
Phi Theta Kappa is collecting the pink lids from Yoplait
products during the month of October (or for as long as they are
available in the stores). October is breast cancer awareness month.
Yoplait will donate 10 cents per lid to the Susan G. Gorman
foundation for breast cancer research. Clean lids may be sent to
Dianne Davis at the Jackson County Center or dropped off at the
Records Office on the main campus to Tess Martin.

Bulgaria Project Committee Guitar Raffle.
The Bulgaria Project Committee is raffling off a handmade guitar
by Emeritus Professor of History George Lamb. Tickets are $5 each
and will be available at the Indoor Yard Sale on October 12th. They

Poetry Publication.
John Hoppenthaler's second book of poetry, "Anticipate the
Coming Reservoir," has just been accepted for publication by
Carnegie Mellon University Press. His first volume with Carnegie
Mellon, Lives Of Water, is now in its second printing. A poem from a
potential third book, "Dance," has recently been accepted for
publication by Tar River Poetry. (submitted by

Halloween Parade. The Children's Room will hold its annual campus Halloween Parade on
Tuesday, Oct. 31st. Approximately 24 to 30 children will be
participating in the parade which begins at 10:15 a.m. Those
interested in having the children visit their area or office, should
