In the past, each division has been asked to donate a center piece for table settings. At the end of the lunch they are given away as door prizes. To date, I only have one division's donation. Thanks for your assistance in this matter. Have a great finals week and look forward to seeing you at the luncheon.  (Submitted by Pat Mollohan 12/8/06)

Honors College Reception.  You are cordially invited to join in the Celebration of Success of our Honor Students next Thursday, Dec. 7 from 6-7pm in the Community Room. The reception is in recognition of the achievements of our honor students and the continued commitment to excellence demonstrated by the Honors Faculty and Honors Council. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is encouraged to stay from 7-8pm for the Honors Seminar featuring Dr. Marie Foster Gnage as our guest speaker.

Honor students poster demonstrations and projects will be on display, having been open to the public from 10-2 earlier in the day. Many of the honor students will be on hand to discuss their projects and research and you are encouraged to visit with them and learn more about their special interests.

Remember, all honor students wishing to earn honors credit must have attended at least one honors seminar. We are strongly encouraging students to attend Dr. Gnage's presentation. Please encourage your students (especially honor students) to attend the open exhibition from 10-2 and I thank you again for helping me get messages to the students until the new email system is in place for me contact them directly.

I look forward to celebrating a great semester with you next Thursday evening.

Employee of the Month.  Congratulations to Al Collins, Campus Police Officer, who has been selected as Employee of the Month for December.  Al began working for West Virginia University at Parkersburg in 1985, and has worked in campus security, student activities, and maintenance for 21 years.   He earned his associate's degree from Parkersburg Community College.

Al Collins

Al has served as Staff Council President as well as many other campus wide committees.  He is currently serving on the Safety Committee and the Christmas Luncheon Committee.  Al lives on the south side of Parkersburg with Kelly, his wife of 18 years, and his two daughters, Tara (a senior at South) and Kyla (a sophomore).  Al and his wife Kelly are active members of Bethel Baptist Church in Lubeck.  They are in charge of the AWANA and the Sunday School teachers programs.  They are leaders in the Fairview 4H Club, and are very active as community volunteers.  They received an award from President Bush last year for having volunteered over 3,000 hours as a family.  Al & Kelly also enjoy watching their daughters compete in several different sports.

Al expressed his gratitude for being selected Employee of the Month by saying “I would like to thank the staff at WVUP for over 20 years of support as part of the WVUP family and let them know that I am looking forward to the next 20 years working with them.”  Following are excerpts from the nominations that served as the basis for Al’s selection as Employee of the Month.

“I would like to nominate Al Collins for employee of the month.  He is just an awesome example of a dedicated employee.  He always lends a (big) helping hand to everyone.”

The Employee of the Month program is sponsored by the WVUP Staff Council.  Nominations may be submitted to Karen Branham in accordance with the guidelines established by Staff Council.  (Submitted by Karen Branham 12/01/06)

Used Textbook Project.  Phi Theta Kappa is presently collecting used text books for a project called Better World Books, Books for Africa, Book Drives for Better Lives. Text books that the bookstore does not buy back can be donated to this cause. (rather than throwing them away).  Phi Theta Kappa will receive fifty cents (.50) for every text book that can be used and a school in Africa gets the benefit of the text book. It is a win/win situation for all.

Any text book that is less than five years old will probably qualify. (No workbooks that have been written in please) There will be boxes for drop off on both campuses. See Lisa Flowers-Clements or Violet Mosser on the main campus and Dianne Davis at Jackson County for more details. (Submitted by Dianne Davis, 12/01/06)
