SeptemberDon’t miss the opportunity to meet Jeff Biggers, award-winning author of "The United States of Appalachia," who will appear on campus at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 6, for a free public presentation in the Caperton Center Auditorium. Copies of his books are available in our campus Bookstore and will be available for purchase at a book signing following his presentation. A sign-in roster will document event attendance for our records. Women & Money Conference. A free "Women & Money" conference will be held Oct. 17 at the Grand Pointe Conference Center. The 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Parkersburg session is sponsored by the WV State Treasurer's office. Speaker will be Dee Lee, a nationally known financial speaker and author. WVU Parkersburg's Theatre Department performed at ARTS FEST sponsored by ACEnet and Art of Ohio, in Athens Sept. 27. The University Players performed several short features s well as participated in some of the events. A booth was set up to display student's handiwork from past productions. Students involved included Valarie Brilliant, Katie Grandick, Jared Van Fossen, Kurtis Decker, Courtney Windom, Brand Neogra, Lita Simms and Megan Jett Also in attendance were faculty members Andrew Clovis and Jeff Byrd. The donations were more than we had expected, and we now have over 25 troop care packages to ship overseas! We are now asking for sponsors to help ship the boxes. The boxes cost $10.95 to ship; sponsors will have the option to pack an unsealed letter in the box they sponsor. Submissions may include, but not be limited to, short stories, plays, poetry, prose, black and white photography, charcoal drawings, and pen and ink drawings. The Parkersburg Art Center will host "Tablescapes 2008" at 6 p.m., Sept. 25. Area designers will prepare "feasts for the eyes" that will be displayed and auctioned to benefit the Art Center. The site is designed as a go-to source for information and resources about planning, preparing and paying for postsecondary education (such as 2- or 4-year colleges and universities, and vocational or career schools). The 2008-2009 season of the Distinguished Performance Series opens with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept.18 in the College Activities Center. One of the last living founders of traditional American bluegrass, Stanley has been performing since 1946. MORE Employee of the Month. Employee of the Month for September is Vickie Yencha. (MORE) Welcome. Deborah McGinnis of the Children's Room will assume the duties of the Information Assistant on Sept. 18th. Faculty , staff and students are encouraged to attend a guest lecture titled, “Appreciating the Hispanic Experience in the United States,” by Richard Fleisher, WVU associate professor for Global Education and Social Justice, at 11a.m., Wednesday (Sept. 17) in the theatre. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Social Justice Committee and Center for Global Initiatives in observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The WVU Parkersburg Relay for Life team invites the campus community to breakfast at Applebee’s in Vienna on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee.
