WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors seeks input regarding college name

Background
A state law (HB 3215) passed last year changed West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s relationship with West Virginia University.  The purpose of the legislation was to establish a statewide network of independent community colleges, including WVU Parkersburg.

A provision of the legislation allows WVU Parkersburg to continue an affiliation with WVU.  The Parkersburg campus is in discussions with WVU now regarding the development of that affiliation.  One aspect under consideration is the possibility of a change in the college name.  WVU has offered to permit WVU Parkersburg to continue to use the name and related trademarked logos until 2011 with the opportunity to renew the agreement.

WVU Parkersburg has posted a list of FAQs on its home page to answer common questions regarding the change; the page is updated as new information is available. Several campus and community forums are planned to seek input about a possible name change and an on-line survey is available as well.

From the WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors

We value our community’s input.  The WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors seeks your input as we prepare to decide whether or not to change WVU Parkersburg’s name.  Whatever action is taken, it needs to be the best long-term solution for the College, its students, its future students and the community as a whole.  We are considering a number of factors in making this determination.   We welcome your input.  Please access the short survey at the link above and let us know your opinion.  While this is not a scientific survey, it will be used as a resource in collecting input. The survey will be available on line until May 17, 2009.  Thank you for sharing your opinion with the Board of Governors.

- Joe Campbell
Chair, WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors
