Work Samples/Permission Forms
NCATE is looking closely at work samples from all areas. The work samples reflect the material taught in each strategies class. Samples should include exemplary, adequate, and inadequate samples of work. Each instructional strategies instructor should have received a pad of student permission forms. Be sure that a form is on file ini the Education Division for each sample. Examples of work samples include thematic units, lesson plans, journals, tests, papers, projects, etc.
Possible Visit Requirements
It is up to the NCATE team chair how the NCATE visit is to be structured. The national team chair will visit the end of September. The last team Cindy Kelley was involved with was much more open and wanted more people involved. The team will likely want a poster session with a dinner or reception. The team will talk with instructors and student representatives. That poster session will be either November 6 or 7.
An instructional strategies forum will likely be conducted Monday or Tuesday morning. We will forward a schedule as soon as one is available. We were commended on support and attendance during the last site visit. Money will be available to pay for substitute teachers for those strategies instructors who are classroom teachers.
Program Reviews
ACEI approved the education program for a year and one-half. Five standards will have rejoinders.
NCTM has requested more information and a response will be sent this month. NCTM liked how the document was put together. Cindy Kelley and Cindy Gissy are working on the response feel good about the outcome.
Key Assignments
Instructors have been asked to identify key assignments to be used as measures of performance in their strategies classes. Students must either meet or exceed the minimum competencies required for this key assignment. NCATE is looking at the impact on student learning in the public schools, and the division must show aggregated data to support this impact.
Instructors are not asked to do anything additional with their students; use an assignment already in place to show competencies. Examples include:
Education 300 - Lesson plans
Reading 302 - Tutee report
Education 320 - Development of test
Music 315 - Final lesson taught
Art 315 - Final presentation (both oral and written)
Patty Moffett may want to videotape the final lessons. If she contacts Cindy ahead of time, maybe someone would be available to set up video equipment. Videos would be great for the NCATE visit.
Please identify key assignments by the first of May and email to Cindy Kelley.
NCATE Team Chair
We have been notified that Dr. David Todt, Shawnee State University, is the national team chair. The remainder of the team has not been announced.
Due Process
The team will be looking closely at the due process. If anyone has any questions, please let Cindy know. The due process is a developmental way of addressing a problem and is part of the assessment system.
We will have another meeting during fall inservice week. We will meet once prior to the team pre-visit and once after.
